BREAKING: KIRIBATI LAWMAKER SAYS CHINA PLANS TO REVIVE STRATEGIC PACIFIC AIRSTRIP || AIRSTRIP WOULD BE CLOSEST CHINESE-BACKED FACILITY YET TO U.S. BASES IN HAWAII

Just got this on the news feed on my Bloomberg Terminal! Doesn't look like it hit any news wires just yet but we should see it soon!! Pretty fucking awesome if this Kiribati official isn't lying. Just what I'm hoping for, as China produces more equipment it projects power further into the ocean. Bases in Kiribati would already be obscenely far away so am a bit confused about this but who knows maybe it's true. Eventually I think there will be bases in Cuba and Venezuela to replicate the harassment the US is doing to China with its bases in Korea and Japan flying 15 miles from Beijing and sailing right down the coastline.

Good find! Thank you! Was looking everywhere for an article. What is your opinion on this? Assuming it is true is it highly likely to be a Chinese military base or is it possibly just another infrastructure project?
Too early to say, seems to be very "deep in enemy territory" for a military base to me. Perhaps a ground station for the space program?

If it was an investment to build a tropical resort surely there are better places. You would have to also build hotels, resorts, attractions, piers etc etc along with renewing the airstrip. It doesn't make much sense to me for this to be a purely commercial thing. Hence also why Reuters etc feel there may be a military purpose behind this.

China‘s Djibouti base was built in 2016, and it recently just got a major overhaul to fit 2 aircraft carriers. If this is true, we could see it take in major surface combatants around 2026
