US should rethink Taiwan 'strategic ambiguity': Indo-Pacific chief

When asked by Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, whether it was time for the U.S. to "state clearly that we are not going to allow communist China to invade and subdue Taiwan," Davidson did not shoot it down.

"I wake up every day, you know, trying to assess the dynamic nature of the geostrategic environment, and you know, frankly we ought to be thinking about these things every day," Davidson said.

"More than 40 years of the strategic ambiguity ... has helped keep Taiwan and its current status, but you know these things should be reconsidered routinely," he said, adding, "I would look forward to the conversation."

Comment: If the US ends strategic ambiguity, China could be forced into an option of only two choices - go to war with the U.S. or grant Taiwan independence.
That is why I feel you are just being a troll. Because granting Taiwan independence is never an option on the table, when reunification is the main theme for the 1.5b Chinese for the past 100+ years.

I said they would have two options, not that they should pick Taiwan independence. If you think going to war is the only preferable option then China needs to communicate that to deter America from ending strategic ambiguity. That's what I'm saying.

Basically, Biden doesn't have a strategy to contain China. It is more like a bully that is so scared that he needs to surround himself with people to enable him to act tough.

'Straight talk' and 'Strength'

What do they hope to achieve? This is not being billed as meeting for reaching agreements. It's a meeting for "straight talk" to set the ground rules for the relationship.

Already the Americans have signalled their approach. The new mantra in Washington is to engage China "from a position of strength."

First, the face-to-face encounter will be a low-key, one-off affair. Traditionally the secretary of state visits Japan, South Korea and China on his or her big trips to Asia. This week only Tokyo and Seoul were on the itinerary for Blinken's inaugural international foray. China is relegated to a stopover on the way back.

And the meeting will be on American soil: that was extremely important, said a senior administration official.

The idea is to counter the Chinese perception that the United States is on the decline, says Michael Green, the senior vice-president for Asia and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Chinese commentators like to say that the "winds are blowing to the East." The financial crisis of 2008, the Capitol Hill riot of 2021 and the years of Trump's unilateralism in between have reinforced a view in China that the US has been weakened inside and out.

"This meeting in Alaska is geared to show the Chinese are wrong on all three counts," says Green. "The schoolyard version of this is to say: "You're not so great…yeah you're big, but we like hanging out with our allies, democracies, because they're cool."

This gave it away "how do we shape that behaviour change that we seek."

How is it any different from any past admins ? Bush, Obama, Trump ? The world always at fault.

Yes the doesn't see how many lies they tell about China. And they don't understand why Chinese don't trust them...
The Chinese did well in not interfering. It is important that if China wants to be one of the global leaders then it must be on side of the Order while Russia and Iran (understandably, Trump wanted war with them) are on the side of Disorder.

Better to have a stable and managed US decline than the mentally ill Trump drugging the rest of the world down with his country

You have to remember this is a US intelligence angle. Do they have proof China even bothered in any election? Really what president has been pro-China? And what they're really talking about is the last couple decades because there was no internet before to influence elections. You have Bush, Obama, and Trump. Which one was so pro-China for China to bother?

Even NK will not accept this humiliation. They should have sanction the two dude going to Alaska.
Maybe that will teach them something.
Nah its just bravado from the US. Everyone knows that they have a weak hand to play and they just want to appear strong, for example, yesterday when they said that China had to fix its relationship with Australia lol, and all these quad meetings and aggressive statements.

Do you see China behaving like this? There is no reason because it is confident and they know that the US is in a weak position now
