China should tell the Aussies that because they have undertaken to spend an extra 200 billion on American products as per stage 1 of the trade agreement, they will have to look at sourcing as much iron ore from the US instead.

200 billion USD is a huge amount. China could use that money to invest in a space program for the purpose of digging ore on asteroids in the future.

While it is sounds too good, high tech and futuristic to mine asteriods, this may not happen until humanity itself, becomes a Type 1 civilization on a Kardashev scale.
Which means humanity is already on the limits of using all the resources on the planet. For example, no more substantial iron ore mines or any ore left to exploit.

Science tells us that, we are all gravity imprisoned on planet earth. We need lots of amount of energy just to send a single kilogram of something into orbit. Our current technology is to explode some chemicals in a rocket, and covert that to kinetic energy which is very expensive and yes explosive rocket science.

Before any large scale out of this world mining takes place, the first step is how to lower the cost in sending something to space. I think the most baby step, China can do is to build first the space elevator. The first nation that can build a space elevator is the nation that literraly control the whole space up to geosynchronous orbits above earth surface. And thats only the beginning. Some science articles say it is still in science fiction, others say it is doable.

So much better, if somebody here has an uncle in politburo standing comittee, tell him to write that up in the next China's 5 year plan.

Back here on earth, let us study more into science, particularly nano materials engineering, so maybe one day we can contribute to this endeavor. For the mean time, let us be nice folks with each other, after all only cooperation can move us forward together.

And what is Chief Accelerator doing? Purge :D
Another day, another silence from Xi. I haven't seen any answer after pompeo regime destroyed the Huawei smartphone business.

Lol mate. Yes the winner is Murica. All facts driving to this conclusion. Politics, employment, covid handling, what a heaven on earth to live to

As the Chinese saying goes, the silent chicken eats the most rice. What answer do you want to hear? Nowhere in the world is lithography and semiconductor technology moving as fast as in China now, with years, decades of advances packed into months, and that's the substance that's worthwhile. Would you prefer to exchange that for a draft-dodging president and his fat side-kick screaming like WWE villains to try to persuade the stupidest people in their country to vote for them?

Long term actions are on the way I agree. But what is short term answer? What if Biden doesn't win or doesn't lift sanctions on Huawei? We all know that Huawei smartphone business is dead especially high-end smartphones now. Most likely winter is last season, or if Huawei made more chips, there will be also a spring season. SMIC can do nothing to help Huawei because is still reliant on American eq and probably will be in 2021, most likely it will be sanctioned soon before US election so short term no way forward.

And what Xi did? Nothing short term. What if Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo are next in the sanction list before the election? He still will do nothing? Because if he will the only left smartphones on the Chinese market for a few years will be Apple and Samsung and LG.

Maybe ban Apple once and for all. And tell them to lobby to lift sanctions against Huawei.

The speed at which these things are developing, the long term action is the short term action. Developing chips and lithographs in months to a year or so is the absolute answer. Do you know what is being done behind the scenes?

I also think that Apple should be banned but for some reason, and they are very friendly in China even cooperating with Chinese screen-makers as their suppliers. I don't know why they haven't banned Apple in China yet but I'm not going to pretend I have a better plan than the CCP does.

And I really don't want a reversal on the chip ban, do you? This ban is the kick that the Chinese industries need to become a leader in the technology. I do not want them to drop back into reliance on foreign chips; this push needs to be uninterrupted even if China's phone industry/market needs to suffer a good bump to get through it.

Your scenarios are basically what you invented assuming that there is nothing going on in China. Ultimately, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo all need to get out of the way for Huawei if they don't use domestic chips because then, they are just vessels for selling foreign chips into China.

Huawei itself just established its own chip-line and is moving to become China's Samsung. Leave it up to Huawei; they never fail.

People on this forum need to learn to deal with uncertainty. With anything whether it is politics, business strategies, etc. There will always be uncertainties. Thats just how things work. You can't have a 100% certain future.

There are endless permutations of the future. So we can go on endless what if.

No half measures here. We are going to have our chip fabs even if we have to eat grass.
