Re: Chinese Daily Photos, Videos & News of 2012!!!

I thought someone might have posted this. I wonder why the Chinese forces did not want to take the lead in mounting the rescue? Actually theres no mention of any Chinese involvement at this stage.

Hijacked ship crew members rescued

TEHRAN - All 28 Chinese crew members aboard a China-linked cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates were rescued on Friday, the Chinese embassy in Tehran said.

The cargo ship, Xianghuamen, was hijacked by Somali pirates at about 8:40 am local time (0410 GMT) on Friday in the Sea of Oman near Iran's southern port of Chabahar.

The Sea of Oman is connected to the Gulf in the west by the Strait of Hormuz, one of the crucial waterways in the world for shipping crude oil.

The vessel, registered in Panama, belongs to Nanjing Ocean Shipping company in eastern China.

The cargo ship, setting off from Shanghai, made a stopover in Singapore to unload some goods and then headed for Imam Khomeini port in southwestern Iran when it was hijacked.

Nine Somali pirates climbed onto the cargo ship by their own ladders, fired shots on the ship and seized the Chinese crew members on board.

Two Iranian naval warships participating in the rescue operation followed the vessel and ordered the pirates to surrender. The pirates later threw their weapons into the sea and surrendered to the Iranian navy.

The hijacked cargo ship's engine was damaged and is in repair. Later the ship will head for the Iranian port of Gask, 70 miles (about 112 km) away from where the hijacking occurred and 200 miles (about 322 km) away from the vessel's destination.

After the hijacking, the Chinese embassy in Tehran started emergency procedures and contacted related Iranian governmental departments, urging the Iranian side to take all necessary measures and spare no efforts to rescue the crew members and ensure their safety.

Yu Hongyang, the Chinese ambassador, requested Iran to put the safety of the hijacked crew members as the first priority, adding that the Chinese government, State Council and Foreign Ministry all expressed grave concerns about the incident.

I understand that the incident with this ship occurred to the East of the convoy route that is worked by the Chinese and other navies and not far from the Iranian coast.

Himalayan avalanche buried 100 Pakistani troops, army says
By Richard Leiby, Updated: Saturday, April 7, 10:00 AM

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — An avalanche buried around 100 Pakistani soldiers on a major army base on a Himalayan glacier close to India on Saturday, military officials said.

“It is a tragedy,” said Major Gen. Athar Abbas, a military spokesman in Islamabad.

The death toll was not immediately known. Officials said rescue efforts were underway with tracking dogs, helicopters and snowmobiles.

“It is feared that maybe it will become one of the major incidents” of weather-related disasters in the remote, frigid region, Abbas said.

That part of the disputed Kashmir region is often called the world’s highest battlefield. Hundreds of Pakistani and Indian troops are based at elevations of up to 22,000 feet.

Siachen, at about 18,000 feet, sits at northern tip of Kashmir, which both India and Pakistan claim as their territory.

More soldiers have died because of harsh weather at the Pakistani outpost than in combat.

India and Pakistan have fought intermittently at Siachen since 1984. Both countries maintain a permanent military presence there. A cease-fire went into effect in 2003.

Before then, more than 2,000 Pakistani and Indian troops died in the inhospitable terrain, mostly because of avalanches, frostbite and other weather hazards.

Together, the nations have about 150 manned outposts along the glacier, with some 3,000 troops each. Officials estimate that the cost of maintaining the outposts is $200 million for Pakistan and $300 million for India.

Correspondent Haq Nawaz Khan in Peshawar contributed to this article.

This illustrates that a compromise on this border dispute is long overdue.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The activist hacker group Anonymous plans to launch further attacks on Chinese government websites in a bid to uncover corruption and lobby for human rights, a member of the group said on Monday.

Anonymous, a loosely knit group that has attacked financial and government websites around the world, hacked into Chinese government websites last week, defacing several, media reports said.

The group used the Twitter account "Anonymous China" to publicize the attacks, posting links to data files that contained passwords and other personal information from the hacked websites. (

"First we want to alert the Chinese government that we aren't afraid, and we are going to show the truth and fight for justice," Anonymous hacker "f0ws3r" told Reuters.

The hacker, who declined to provide any personal details, was contacted through Anonymous China's Twitter page. F0ws3r said the group planned more serious attacks against Chinese websites.

"Yes, we are planning more attacks, a few at a time," f0ws3r said, adding that the plan was to take down the "Great Firewall of China".

China blocks Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and many other websites citing a need to maintain social stability.

F0ws3r said the Anonymous China group consisted of 10 to 12 hackers, most of whom were not based in China, and had "hundreds" of translators working with them to hack the Chinese websites.

The hacker declined to give further details on the next round of attacks, except to say it may hit bigger targets.

The United States says it has suffered many high-profile hacking attacks that appear to come from China, often targeting human rights groups as well as U.S. companies. China maintains that it too is a victim of hacking attacks.

The various local Chinese governments whose websites were reportedly hacked last week could not be reached for comment and were operating normally on Monday.

In March, the U.S. authorities revealed that leading Anonymous hacker "Sabu" was arrested in June and was acting as an informant for authorities.

Anonymous and LulzSec, an offshoot of Anonymous that took credit for a range of hacking attacks on government and private sector websites worldwide, leapt to prominence in late 2010 when they launched what they described as the "first cyber war" in retaliation for attempts to shut down the Wikileaks website.

It's more than interesting that Anonymous has taken to targeting China only AFTER its leader has been caught, and has agreed to "cooperate". Is the leader cooperating to stop cyber-crime? From the article, it looks to me like he has agreed to cooperate with the U.S. governments foreign policy agenda. I wonder who supplied "hundreds" of Chinese translators.

Didn't some of the Anonymous members were kidnapped by rebel in some South American country? Later on, the Anonymous group even threaten to disable the captives computer if there members were not return safely and unharmed. I haven't heard anything about it since.

Hopefully this will spur Chinese web developers to be more aware of security issues in the future. I'd be interested to see if Chinese hackers are going to retaliate in any way. They should try taking down Twitter and Facebook.

Hackers are more motivated by ego than a humanitarian cause. It's absurd to believe Western hackers had some sort of hands-off policy on China until now. Why now? It's called bull. Hackers face the same hurdles that intelligence agencies face up against China. The Chinese language is a code to decipher in itself. They wouldn't know what they're reading in the first place. Some American university professor I read about says the charge that China is not transparent is incorrect because he's exmined it and says much of what is charged can be found in publicly accessed publications but it's written in Chinese.

Some here complained about discussions of Japan nuclear crisis as being insensitive to their feelings.
If only Japan cares as much about the world's feelings as they make another radioactive dump into the Pacific, 'accidentally' of course.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said as much as 12 tons of radioactive water leaked from a pipe at its crippled Fukushima nuclear station, the second such incident in 11 days at the same pipeline, raising further doubts about the stability of the plant.

Part of the water may have poured into the sea through a drainage ditch, Osamu Yokokura, a spokesman for the utility, said by phone. The company known as Tepco stopped the leak from a pipe connecting a desalination unit and a tank today, he said.

“There will be similar leaks until Tepco improves equipment,” said Kazuhiko Kudo, a research professor of nuclear engineering at Kyushu University, who visited the plant twice last year as a member of a panel under the Nuclear and Industry Safety Agency. “The site had plastic pipes to transfer radioactive water, which Tepco officials said are durable and for industrial use, but it’s not something normally used at nuclear plants,” he said. “Tepco must replace it with metal equipment, such as steel.”

Tepco has about 100,000 tons of highly radioactive water accumulated in basements at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear station nearly 13 months after the March 11 quake and tsunami caused meltdowns and the worst radiation leaks since Chernobyl. The tsunami knocked out all power at the station, causing cooling systems for reactors to fail. The utility was forced to set up makeshift pumps to get cooling water to the reactors, with most of it then draining into basements.
More Leaks

Tepco has been criticized before over its handling of the radioactive water following several leaks into the sea, including the one reported on March 26.

Last year, the environment group Greenpeace International said it found seaweed and fish contaminated to more than 50 times the 2,000 becquerel per kilogram legal limit for radioactive iodine-131 off the coast of Fukushima during a survey between May 3 and 9.

Mol, Belgium-based Nuclear Research Centre and Herouville- Saint-Clair, France-based Association pour le Controle de la Radioactivite dans l’Ouest confirmed at the time they conducted analysis of the samples supplied by Greenpeace.

The radioactive material discharged into the sea from the Fukushima plant is the largest in history, according to a study by the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety. The institute, which is funded by the French government, made the estimate in October last year and said it was 20-times the amount calculated by Tepco. Tepco declined to comment on the report at the time.
Strontium Risk

The latest leak contains about 16.7 becquerels per cubic centimeter of radioactive cesium 134 and 137 combined, Tepco said in a statement today. It’s still investigating how much strontium and other types of radioactive particles are contained in the water, Yokokura said.

Strontium can be absorbed in the body through eating tainted seaweed or fish. It then accumulates in bone and can cause cancer, said Tetsuo Ito, the head of Kinki University’s Atomic Energy Research Institute, in a December interview.

On March 26, about 120 tons of radioactive water may have leaked from a pipeline connected to the desalination unit, Yokokura said. Of the leaked water, Tepco believes about 80 liters poured into the sea, he said. .

No surprise then the radioactivity is showing up in California as North America is the first land fall for these Fukushima materials due to ocean current and wind direction.
But hey, Japan is US's 'ally', no problem to share some of the radioactive load.

Radioactive particles released in the nuclear reactor meltdown in Fukushima, Japan, following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami were detected in giant kelp along the California coast, according to a recently published study.

Radioactive iodine was found in samples collected from beds of kelp in locations along the coast from Laguna Beach to as far north as Santa Cruz about a month after the explosion, according to the study by two marine biologists at Cal State Long Beach.

The levels, while most likely not harmful to humans, were significantly higher than measurements prior to the explosion and comparable to those found in British Columbia, Canada, and northern Washington state following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, according to the study published in March in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Giant kelp, or Macrocystis pyrifera, is a particularly good measure of radioactive material in the environment because it accumulates iodine, researchers said. They wrote that radioactive particles released into the atmosphere, in particular radioactive isotope iodine 131, made its way across the Pacific, then was likely deposited into the ocean during a period of significant rain shortly after the meltdown in Japan. .................................................................

Re: Spitfires!!!

Breaking old news: a British farmer has found the place in Burma were, in 1945(?), twenty Spitfire II's were buried to prevent them falling into Japanese hands. It says so in this article in The Daily Telegraph:
