China begins making homegrown DUV chipmaking tools, The Information reports​

July 27 (Reuters) - China has begun manufacturing domestically developed immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, a key chipmaking tool long dominated by Dutch supplier ASML (ASML.AS), opens new tab, The Information ‌reported on Monday.

The machines are expected to be delivered this year to leading Chinese chipmakers, including Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (0981.HK), opens new tab, Hua Hong Semiconductor (688347.SS), opens new tab and ChangXin Memory Technologies, the report said, citing people familiar with ⁠the matter.

ASML shares dropped 4.6% after the report.

Except the clowns in Washington. They are probably running in circles trying to figure out how to ban China from producing domestic DUV machines made from domestic parts. “China must stop producing DUVs that we deemed illegal or we will tariff them by 500%.”

How low can these Chinese DUV machines go in terms of NM. Previous SMEE DUV were limited to 28NM as far as I remember.

Reportedly, this is Sicarrier DUV which is the one the Huawei is involved in. 5 DUV in 2026 and 20 DUV in 2027. I heard somewhere of 40 in 2028 but I haven’t found that mentioned in any articles.

So is SMEE being left in the dust now? I don’t recall hearing their DUV in mass production so far.

ALL immersion DUV machines can only reach 38nm in resolution limit. But with the process, whatever double patterning (28nm) or SAQP can reach all the way down to 7nm. My guess that China has achieved close to 14-7nm using multi-patterning with their lithography machines. That is something they stated in 2024 when they developed immersion subsystems for that process node.
