Speaking of which, with all attention given to J-10C radar, did we ever have a good look at its IRST?

Apart from vague sentences(veri gud) and external guesstimations(mirror colour - likely LWIR; ability to "hide" to preserve RCS), I don't remember any public details, despite aircraft being available for export.

Have we heard anything from the Pakistanis about the IRST so far? They keep doing magazine interviews and have talked about the engine's raw performance before...

Hi,
probably they won’t until these fighters been exported to other countries where there is a chance of these kind of information coming out easily, usually Pakistani armed forces personnel brag less about these kind of info until unless they are RETD even then their info might be vague and incomplete as you can check all their interviews or statements since 2022 of getting J10c they never say anything about PL15e or range or bla bla
may be we come to k is about IRST through Chinese media or by CAC someday
thank you

I remember reading that J-16 IRST gives longer (20%?) ranges than Su-35 one.

Since OLS-35 is a known quality, both J-16 and J-10 IRSTs look rather similar, I guess this may be a starting point. With a caveat that such statements aren't given under oath, of course.

My current guess is both are direct doctrinal ancestors of J-20 unit, in that both are dedicated long range search/track units with only secondary WVR role. A la Leonardo Pirate.

The fighter jets of the first J-10 regiment. The 3rd and 5th digits of the 5-digit serial number represent the aircraft sortie number.

Not sure if it is a translation issue, but what do you mean with „fighter jets of the first J-10 regiment“? These are claerly not from the sites unit, but the only naval unit and also digits 3+5 are not sortie numbers (??) but as usual for all PLAAF and PLAN NA systems their „more number“. In fact they are from the 4th Naval Aviation Division (nor abolished) as shown by the 4th digit number „4“ and the second digit no. 3 represents the 3rd regiment of that said unit aka the 12th AI. … the „8“ stands for Naval Aviation as the 1st digit.
