In short, the light and angle of the satellite shot played tricks and the inferior resolution nailed it.

Should never made wild guess when it's "can't-see-sh*t resolution".

its ok to make guesses but its a lesson to not build extensive theories on top of guesses and especially to not get emotionally invested in wishful theories. at a certain point the conversation should just stop at "we don't know".

Roughly to scale, 09IIIA and this new sub. The sail does appear quite a bit smaller, volume wise. Like 50% smaller when its area is viewed from the side?

That doesn't mean much, 09III series are pretty conservative and backwards in design with their massive sails. Now compare it to something like the 774s you'll find that the overall proportions looks basically the same if not actually a bit longer on the new JN submarine.
Nothing really "advanced" and "next generation" about the sail.

IMO the actual remarkable thing about this new submarine is the interesting control surface arrangement, this new submarine has massive X rudders and is designed in such a way that it is relatively low profile but very long almost fin like.
