the lighting is fairly near zenith so its reasonable the entirety of the shadow would be cast on the hull. the curvature of the hull itself would diffuse the shadow quite quickly as well.

But he still insists that the diameter is 10-11m. There is a full-size J-15 model near submarine as reference.

Going from a tiny sail to a small sail doesn't change the overall conclusion, if a 09X has been launched from both Jiangnan and Huludao.

These are first-in-class boats for a likely successor submarine, which from a hydrodynamic perspective, is optimised for high underwater performance, which should be quieter and faster than any other submarine in the world.

And if the 09X diameter is around 12.5m, that is close enough to the Type-095 that it makes sense for both to share the same nuclear reactor design and therefore the same hull diameter. And it may be that Huludao produces the [reactor and propulsion module(s)] and ships these to Jiangnan.

So the 09X might actually turn into the Type-095A?

keep in mind that designation is a PLAN choice, 039 and 039A are entirely different

so I would generally advise to not get yourself too concerned with 09X vs 095A designation.

There were rumours a over a year ago that not only was 09V building but also "095A" was being developed. I think most of us suspected that the latter would be a development of the former but I suspect we're looking at 09VA here.

Not to boast but I prefer my measurements here (partially because the methodology is important)

I think the width might be more than just 10-11m. This is just the waterline, the actual dimensions should be more

My overlay should be good enough here.. Though of course it's always rough with satellite angles and distortions and whatnot

Good catch the 095A is obviously an Air Force variant that’s right the PLAAF is *flying* nuclear submarines.
