Joint-venture of JLR and Chery revealed the Freelander 8, it is now a production-ready hybrid SUV, and it’s bigger than a Defender 110. Production of the Freelander 8 will take place at joint-venture in Changshu, China.

So, I still regard Australian monthly sales data as too variable to be truly meaningful. But with that caveat out of the way...

BYD was Australia's #2 brand in April, with 7702 sales up 140% YoY. #2!

This can't be dismissed as a fluke, coming off the back of a #3 finish in March.

Moreover, although BYD is "only" #5 YTD, the five brands beneath Toyota are tightly packed, separated by only 2500 vehicles or ~10%.

2026 Sales YTD
1. Toyota 59,675; down 23%
2. Mazda 27,526; down 13%
3. Kia 27,080; up 4%
4. Ford 25,920; down 10%
5. BYD 25,243; up 111%
6. Hyundai 25,103; up 5%
7. GWM 19,595; up 27%
8. Mitsubishi 17,345; down 26%
9. Chery 16,058; up 92%
10. MG 14,273; down 2%

If present circumstances continue, there's a reasonable prospect that BYD could finish as Australia's #2 brand for H1 2026. Lots more numbers over at

. Geely and Zeekr are flying too.

COVID-19 gave China's automotive industry its first big lift in Australia. Perhaps Donald Trump will be credited with the second.

To be seen whether the uptick is due to recent spike in gas prices or is here to stick for real.

Interesting that BYD sales are surging worldwide with almost double digit growth, but in China it has seen a sharp decline which didn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Won’t be surprise if Overseas sales dwarfs BUD local sales this year, which will be shocking since just a few years ago the local market made almost 80% of their sales .
Chery already makes about half their sales from overseas , BYD will probably reach that ratio this year.
I can only imagine if BYD was able to keep their growth rate and market share in China like before coupled with the lot overseas growth we have seen this past year, then they probably will be among the top 3 car makers globally this year by sales/figures.

In April 2026 BYD took the top spot in retail sales by brand in the Brazilian auto market for the first time. BYD breaking into a market long dominated by Fiat Volkswagen and GM is a feat that even Toyota has not achieved. Considering that BYD is at a stage where local production plants are not yet fully operational and the dealer network is still being established there is potential for it to expand its influence further as supply infrastructure improves. On the other hand BYD remains in 5th place in total sales including rental and corporate fleet sales. There is significant room for share expansion in this segment depending on BYD future strategy.

While BYD has taken the lead as a single brand the presence of European manufacturers remains large when looking at the aggregate share by region. Whether other Chinese brands can follow the market BYD has opened will be the key to determining overall market dominance.

I’m actually as impressed by what South Korean brands have achieved in the automotive sector as well. I remember growing up South Korean cars were made fun of as being cheap Japanese copies (forget western ones lol). Today they compete head to head with Japan in almost every field and even China. For their size it’s quite impressive .

About 20 years ago I drove a rental Santa Fe. The car barely accelerated after I floor the accelerator paddle.
