don't take it as a pat on the back. the us loves to talk up their opponents because it will make their accomplishments more heroic. when you're inferior, they'll call you an equal. when you're at parity, they'll call you superior. they only change the tune when you're so superior they can't win, then they'll try to diminish you as much as possible.

I don't think so. It really depends on the person. Some people will say that the US has an overwhelming advantage in order to make the crowd happy. Trump emphasizes during every speech in which the US military is mentioned that it is the greatest military to ever exist and it's "very good at fighting" because his base is kept happy when they hear him say what they want to hear. You will have others saying that the US is behind China; sometimes it is a true genuine issue and sometimes it is because this person wants funds for the military... sometimes both.
This we've yet to see and I don't think so at all. When China becomes overwhelmingly superior to the US militarily, the US will probably emphasize diplomacy, how it has better relations with the Anglo countries and Japan/S Korea, which it will call, "the world," thus trying to make Beijing look like a brute. Or maybe they won't even dare act hostile at all because by the time China's military eclipses the US, its economy and technology will probably make the US look third world and it would simply be no good at all to antagonize such a nation.
you're right on that, the us will only play the games it knows it can win at so the truest signal of defeat is when they rotate to a different topic altogether.
