Not sure what the name Empire Hope is supposed to convey, but a good effort. Still, no Seawise Giant in terms of size.

such a magnificent project.

construction of this Floating island has started in Shanghai as per the CCTV.

A major national science and technology infrastructure project, the deep-sea all-weather resident floating research facility, was officially launched in Shanghai on Saturday, according to CCTV News. Dubbed the "Open-Sea Floating Island", the world’s first ultra-large marine research platform is designed to support scientific research needs in fields such as marine equipment, marine resources, and marine science..

This semi-submersible twin-hull platform is the world’s first mobile, self-sustaining artificial island. The main platform system innovatively adopts a "semi-submersible catamaran" hull design, possessing the capability for large-scale deep-sea equipment trials at 100-ton levels, and can conduct scientific exploration and experimental research at depths of up to 10,000 meters.

With its ultra-high load capacity, ultra-long stay, and ultra-strong typhoon resistance, these three super-performance characteristics enable it to operate in harsher sea conditions, for longer periods, and at greater depths, facilitating such work.

The "Floating Island in the Far Sea" large-scale scientific facility is expected to be completed in 2030. Its unique design allows it to simultaneously meet the nation's research needs in marine equipment, marine resources, and marine science. It will provide a live-fire testing platform for deep-sea mining systems, key ship-to-sea equipment, and marine oil and gas equipment; accelerate the commercial exploitation and utilization of marine resources.

It is reported that the main system of the facility platform will be able to operate stably in sea states of up to level 7, survive a super typhoon of level 17, and has a capacity of 238 people. Yang Jianmin, Chief Scientist of the Deep-Sea Science Facility at Shanghai Jiao Tong University: "A large moon pool, nearly 31 meters long and 10 meters wide, has been set up here. It can deploy various heavy-duty equipment to conduct experiments in the sea. It can lift loads of up to 300 tons and operate at depths up to 6,000 meters.

China Merchants Energy Shipping (招商轮船) has launched its largest capital expenditure plan in history, placing a huge order for 10 new VLCCs with capacity of 306,000 deadweight tons each, with top domestic shipbuilding companies through its wholly-owned subsidiary in Hong Kong, Associated Maritime Co.

This mega-order is expected to be fully undertaken by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group (Dalian Shipbuilding, DSIC), a core subsidiary of CSSC. It is worth noting that due to the severe shortage of resources at Dalian Shipbuilding's main shipyard, Dalian Shipbuilding is highly likely to adopt a cross-regional capacity collaboration model, jointly undertaking the construction of these giant vessels with its wholly-owned subsidiary, China Shipbuilding Tianjin (formerly Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry).

Capacity expansion by re-opening closed sites. PLAN should really consider using some of this additional capacity for multiple simultaneous CVN/LHD builds.

Let me share some stories from my family.

My maternal grandfather used to work at Guangdong Machinery Import & Export Co., Ltd in 80s and 90s. The then-CEO followed the trend and established a small shipyard in 2007. However, the 2008 global financial crisis, followed by the European debt crisis, led to a decade-long slump in the shipbuilding market, resulting in unsold ships and halting production.

They lost about a hundred million at the shipyard, adding to the woes that defrauded of tens of millions of yuan by a South African businessman, the company was in dire straits. As a state-owned enterprise, his pensions couldn't be delayed, but younger employees could only be paid very low base salaries, while the older employees were simply waiting for retirement.

The debt was simply too much. In 2014, the shipyard was incorporated into Guangxin Holdings Group, essentially transferring its burden to it's parent state-owned enterprise. This was followed by a decade-long debt and asset restructuring. During this period, the shipyard was limited by its facilities and could only build ships with a deadweight tonnage of no more than 50,000 tons, mainly producing some marine engineering vessels.

Latest news? Last year, under the impetus of the Guangdong SASAC, GSI and Guangxin Holdings reached a cooperation agreement. Guangxin Holdings funded upgrades, while GSI provided orders. The shipyard is now equipped with an 80,000-ton dry dock and a 30,000-ton semi-dock slip, primarily targeting methanol dual-fuel chemical/product oil tankers and marine engineering vessels. Since the cooperation began, GSI has provided at least 2 MR oil tanker order to this ship yard.

Of course, this has nothing to do with my maternal grandfather; he passed away ten years ago.
