Considering how fast Iran has responded compare to last time, all the generals and leaders must know can die any moment and had orders to continue the fight.

My bet is that Khameni death is not going to end the war
A pet conspiracy theory I sometime entertain is Iranian generals did not infact all meet at one place knowing USIS was about to strike, that the intel they received on the upcoming strike also told them who the Mossad agents are, and knowing that feed him false information so that USIS started the war believing Iran lost it's entire leadership, which in turn actually ensured the safety of their leadership.

Or maybe Iran doesn't need leaders and orders and intel are just diseminated through pigons, who knows.

That's basically all mountains. The logistics would be painful, to say the least.

The topography of Afghanistan is worse; the terrain is more rugged, mountains are higher, valleys are narrower, and the existing infrastructure (in 2001) was severely degraded compared to Iran's. The weather is also harsher in Afghanistan, especially from Autumn to Spring. But US got in anyway and occupied it for 20 years. Although the US did not have a good time, they still wrecked Afghanistan for decades to come. I think it is doable in Iran; not saying it is easy (especially as Iran is more developed as a fighting force, but maybe not as experienced at resistance as the Afghan veterans of the civil war and preceding Soviet War).

The most important area to occupy is this flat land where majority of the oil is.

I suspect US wants to break this piece off just as Kuwait was once splintered from Iraq. The demographics of this area - Arabs and Lurs - have a history of conflict with the state, as well as some active separatist groups (Lurs are often labeled as Kurds),

This map was suggested once by an American decades ago. It probably won't happen but you can guess what the thought process is in Washington,

That flat land is the same area Iraq invaded and lost half a million soldiers in, if I recall correctly. It may be flat, but it is defended and controlled from high ground. Meaning anyone who tries to occupy it without also occupying the high ground is likely to be on the receiving end of extermination.

But it is US invading, not Iraq. Remember also, Iran is not invincible - it was invaded & occupied by both Russia and Britain less than a century ago.
