I guess the failed plan to storm the nuclear facility was probably a failed attempt to rescue the pilot.
If the F-15 was shot, I have a feeling Iran is aware of the pilot's location and is luring in the rescuers for an ambush. Perhaps, they may have been ambushed once already.

Anybody notice that Iran hasn't struct any Arab military assets? Qatar, for example, has a Typhoon and F-15 that goes live daily (for more than a year) on FR24 at the Doha international airport.

A shame no manpads arround. This low altitude rescue op is a bit too ballsy, I'm sceptical

It's not that hard to understand. An armed warship was heading back to reinforce their country at war. Thus, as an adversary, it was to be sunk at the next best opportunity.

I don't know why people have a hard time understanding that warships are targets, especially for submarines. Compared to schools, neighborhoods, hospitals and the likes, this is actually a fully justifiable action and the Americans would have been foolish to not sink the ship. Warfare is neither kind, nor fair nor particularly moral. Rules of Engagement and Conventions are a joke and everyone disregards them as soon as it suits them.

I'm also not surprised at all that there was no attempt to rescue the shipwrecked. Especially as it's a submarine, what are they going to do? Invite hostile combatants into bowels of their nuclear submarine? Exposing their position? No, they launched, they sunk, they disappeared.

The real shock (or to some of us, including myself not so shocking) was that India presumably lured them away from Iran, knowing about a US presence and ignoring the SOS calls, leaving the Sri Lankan authorities to respond and rescue the survivors.
Bizzare that we're even having this debate on a military forum. This is expected on YouTube or Reddit where there's a far more casual audience.

No country will have their nuclear attack submarine go and rescue a target period. The two countries are in conflict and the target is a fairly modern frigate with some semblance of anti-shipping capability. The most suitable and lowest risk way to remove it from the chess board is to sink it via submarine. What more needs to be said?

and how exactly would have them onboard give away the position of the submarine and to whom?
Because they'd have to surface (for a significant period) to rescue the shipwrecked. And their presence was probably supposed to be unknown to regional navies and countries. Meaning they only were to make themselves known when the opportunity for attack presented itself, and after that presumably leaving the general area.

It is completely reasonable and any modern submarine commander would conduct their operations likewise.

WW2 didn't involve taking combatants on board of one of your most secretive nuclear powered submarines.

People need to stop being naive, it's childish.
