They had SAMs and the ability to intercept many missile.

But like in the 12-day war, some missiles still penetrated, perhaps because too many interceptor missiles had already been used up in that war.

That what happens when you rush a war thinking that you can win it within a few days and don't take into consideration the amount of interceptors you have and the amount you should have in a war with Iran especially since you have data from the 12 day war that would make it easier for you to estimate the number.

If Iran did indeed receive them, then they either were overwhelmed, underused, or didn't work as designed.

Iran never had HQ-9s. I don't know why people come up with this. China isn't giving out HQ-9s like candy.
