So the tinpot wannabe big oompa loompa dictator spent probably a billion dollars for the war operation just so that He can brag about killing an 86 years old religious Man. The death of Khamenei is a pretty big deal because it shows that Iran cannot protect its leaders. So regardless of how many people might be under Khamenei for succession, I doubt that seems like a secure job position for any of the potential candidates.

I don't think they have enough stockpiles to reasonably defend the region, economic stability or political capital, at the home. A few days or weeks max. If they fail until then, it will be another epic victory "we destroyed Iran nuclear program" in the form of "we decapitated the regime", before pulling back again.

Depending on the level of air supremacy US and Israel can achieve over Iran. US and IAF don't really need high tech expensive weapons when most Iranian ADs are rendered ineffective and missile launchers destroyed or sealed in tunnels with bombed entrance. At that point just drones with hellfire are enough to take out most targets, supporting dissidents taking over by bombing security forces.

Khamenei could have died from natural causes anytime since he was 86. So I’m pretty sure he would have chosen a successor in place well before this.
