Guys, you're firmly behind VKS now (as war in Ukraine has rather clearly show, R-37M handily suppresses AIM-120C-8). That's without R-77M, which is, unlike AIM-260, combat deployed.Concerns about China eroding the ‘missile gap’ with the West
With China, it isn't China eroding missile gap with the West, China is very firmly ahead in whole domain, across its enture core fleet, with full war stocks of relevant missiles. It's the west in a desperate ketchup to erode a >10 yr capability gap.
Even best and brightest(AIM-120D-3. MBDA Meteor) don't quite make it, and some of the most desperate (USN) went for ad-hoc solutions. And the new bright kid(AIM-260) not only still hasn't even started deployment, it'll take years to amass stocks, update fighters, train pilots and get the whole system operational.
IMHO J-36 bay is designed around this very weapon, primarily.Internally J-36 yes, J-50 probably not. But by the two those are ready for LRIP then newer missiles will be ready.
