Damn, I thought this news article was lying to me.

Jokes aside - There are also American spy satellites which overfly Huludao on a daily (if not almost daily) basis would've caught the 095 as soon as it was launched, given that it'd be spending many weeks doing fitting-out and mooring trials right in the open before conducting sea trials.

The only "surprise" element for us PLA fanbois would be when the OSINTers managed to get satellite imageries of the 095 and posted about them on Twitter or Naval News (ahem) - As in, the "surprise" would have significant latency, compared to, say, the first flights of the J-36 and J-XDS/50.

So I think that it's definitely something else.

Given the size of submarines and the number of satellites in general, there's probably hourly imagery available of Huludao these days.

It could simply be something like DF-51 spotted, although thinking about it, how exactly are they going to get it unofficially revealed like J-36/50 etc while also being able to give some people a bit of lead time to get the rumor out before it happens.

The PLARF guys could just cover the TEL with the China Post camo/tarps, and we the public wouldn't know any better.

For one, I was thinking of whether this purported hypersonic missile test slated for late-night tomorrow counts as the 2025 Christmas surprise:

But eh, I don't know.

Implying something "big" this Christmas again? Could be H-20 or 3rd J-36, but iirc J-36 has been around for long enough that additional prototypes probably isn't cause for alarm unless there are radical changes with this one. It might also be something Navy related like 095 but I doubt this one as security around Bohai is much higher and submarines doesn't fly making it much harder to spot.

They built an exact replica of the Trump Class Battleship.

@052D成都舰 said that the Christmas Surprise 2025 is the 3rd J-36, and insists that the speed at which China managed to get to the 3rd flying prototype is already a shocking element by itself.

Whether he meant what he said, or he was saying that to hide something else - I guess we'll find out.

Well, that's boring as fuck then. I wouldn't even call this a normal suprise much less a Christmas suprise. Also, his phrase "This is faster than Coldwar" just ain't true. Take the F-15 program, they were able to fly and build 3 additional prototype within half a year from the first flight and F-15 even flew with its target engine from the second prototype onward. F-15 and it's engine, F100 was no less groundbreaking in technology at its time than later successors.

Grinchy, aren't you? What did you think we were in for? Years and years of new fighter/bomber designations every year? You think this is 1937, you got Corsair, Wildcat, Thunderbolt, Lightning, Mustang coming out every year?

Well, it most likely is, calibrated to the generation of fighter. As we go from first to 6th gen, the complexity rises, making development cycles much longer. WWII aircraft like P-47, P-51, etc... took 14-18 months from first flight to service. F-4 took 2.5 years. F-15, F-16 took 3.5-4.5 years, F-22, F-35 took 8+ years. So having a 6th gen move at a comparable speed to a 4th gen, is really much faster.

Chengdu Gay Guy Hainan Homosexual Guy making two posts this morning:

1st Post:
Is it there? Or is it not?

2nd Post:
Today is the birthday of Chairman Mao, and on today last year, the self-esteem of Americans was greatly stunned. Now, one year later, what kind of development have we reached? What kind of answer did our friends in the West give in this year?

100 SinoDefenseForum Bucks that nothing happens today if not for the rest of this year (though I'd love to lose this bet)

….……………Okay fine. I didn’t want to have to do this for this year, but….……………

Dear AVIC,

It’s been a very good year. In fact, the best year ever, thus far. You have spoiled us beyond belief and we are forever grateful and in awe.

We would also like to reflect on this moment, and apologise for some members’ over-exuberance, triumphalism, and impatience. Please do not take this the wrong way, but the hardest part of this year has actually been adjusting to your great generosity. We will get better. I think the mods might even consider getting reacquainted with their banning powers (just saying).

That being said, and although we probably don’t deserve it, and could easily occupy ourselves with trying to actually complete a cataloguing of all the gifts you given us this year (plus the associated conjecture, of course) — we are once again coming to you cap in hand <insert Bernie Sanders meme>.

So it looks like this year, because you are “suffering from success” (VTOL fighter, seriously?), we impatiently and presumptuously await our presents.

And if you think we are more deserving of a lump of coal — please note that coal is black, sometimes shiny, and can come in interesting shapes — it will only lead to 23 new pages in the H-20 thread, and creation of a new thread about your advancements in RAM and metamaterials!

Thank you, Merry Christmas, and Harmonious Mao Day,

SDF

:)
