Singlish is not the same as Singaporean-accented English. Singlish uses a Chinese grammatical order ("you want go watch movie ah?" is a direct translation of 你要去看电影吗？ as opposed to English "do you want to go to watch a movie?") and very large amount of non-English vocabulary, making it a creole language like Haitian creole or Jamaican Patois, or the many of the other Caribbean islands. Singaporeans speak in the former to each other casually and in the latter in official business or to foreigners. This recording is an example of the former. This is short sighted view. We all know there is on going campaign, 1.6 billion USD currently, for decades to demonize China and Chinese.
Unlike Hong Kong, Singapore have always emphasized on preserving our Chinese roots but maintain racial harmony by not being overly pro China. Thats why we have Speak Mandarin campaigns and compulsory Mandarin language lessons in schools.
We should not easily give in to this culture war by the US to sway our young from our Chinese roots.
With the US massive influence in the english media, this will not be easy. Furthermore, presently we still need the US for our national security so our tiny speck of a nation will need to proceed precariously in geopolitics.
