The reason they use low power turboshaft engines is because these are what is available in China right now. This is good enough to figure out the problems of making a tiltrotor in a prototype.

But you already have the carrier AWACS aircraft KJ-600. Their turboprop engine converted into a turboshaft should have the power level for an Osprey sized aircraft.
Does KJ-600 even use new engines? Most people on Weibo seems to say it still uses WJ-6C. Also there is a 5000kW turboshaft under development so no need to convert turboprops into turboshafts.

KJ-600 Engines dimension doesn't match with any WJ-6C variant also has large air intake, length and width doesn't match too.. but nobody knows, which Engines have used on KJ-600. we can only guess

AEP-400 Entered in material selection stage last year. i have send you the screen-shot on Engine thread.

converting turboprops into a turbo shaft is somewhat like making a new engine from start or
is it like in and out kind of elements from a engine to get ready the other one

The two engines share the same core engine, meaning the most difficult and time-consuming components do not need to be developed repeatedly.

In fact, China developed the AEP100 and AES100 using the same core engine.

The same is true for AES500 and AEP500, which are currently under development.

– Ceiling: 6000m
– Max speed: 380km/h
– Hybrid propulsion
– Designed with high-elevation operating environment in mind (i.e. Tibetan plateau)

The data is very average, and it seems to have the same plateau performance as the AC332 helicopter weighing less than 4 tons.
