Pardon my ignorance, but...

Why would the PLAAF ever attempt to fly the J-20 undetected within range of Japanese radar during peace time? All they would be doing is giving Japan opportunities to gather free intel. I'm sure PLAAF would love for the USAF to fly the B-21 off the coast of China so they can conveniently gather signals intelligence off the B-21.

I would think that stealth fighters like the J-20 and F-35 would always use radar reflectors when flying over international territory.

Indeed it doesn’t make much sense, but with J-20 they have the option of retractable luneburg lens. This allows for a lot of tactical flexibility.

i think the j-20’s flights through the tsushima strait in peacetime serve two main purposes: strategic signaling and technical validation. if japan, south korea, or u.s. forces failed to detect the aircraft in time, that would suggest the j-20’s stealth is working as intended—not that china is “giving away free intel.” if they did detect it yet took no action, that would be highly unusual. a more realistic response would be to scramble fighters, close in, and use onboard radars to test how far away they could spot and lock onto the j-20. that kind of real-world engagement is more valuable to them than simply announcing “we saw it.” as for radar reflectors, that is a deliberate, controlled choice. when the mission calls for demonstrating actual stealth performance, like flying through the tsushima strait, i think it’s entirely plausible the plaaf could remove the lenses and let the j-20 operate at full low-observable capability.

Hi,
another excuse for china to let photograph the J20s with so many high reece pictures can
be about their confidence on J20s stealth, just for the sake another can be china might know
some stealth features of F22 & F35 to tackle in future face off
thank you

it can be confirmed that the j-20 has flown across the tsushima strait, whether it was detected or not is unclear, though i believe it wasn’t.

The article says that Wang Hai unit passed through the straight. It also said the unit has changed 5 types of aircraft. It did not say which of the 5 types did the pass through. I don't understand how could this vague wording being used to confirm anything.

You can see that I have added two images: one is a screenshot from a video released by China Central Television, and the other is a screenshot from CCTV Military’s WeChat public account (you can use AI to translate the content of the images). Here is also a video link:

I am native Chinese speaker, so I have no problem in interpretting the sources provided.

There are two types of CCTV sources just like two types of PLA sources. One is the official read-out from 新闻联播 or PLA spokeperson. The other is their social media accounts such as your screen captures 小央视频. I have utmost trust to the former, but I treat the later no more than rumors from random netizens because the later even from PLA weibo account has in multiple times made laughable posts such as F-22 in place of J-20. And my judgement is and will be solely based on the article by 新闻联播.

我不认为央视军事视和央视网有必要在这件事上撒谎,没有任何意义且新闻联播很少播报这种飞行任务,除非是像‘联合利剑’性质的军演

Because otherwise the only way to enter the PH Sea past the 1IC is through here:

It's not that the PLAAF intends to fly the J-20 near Japanese radars. The PLAAF intends to fly where they want, and where they want, there are Japanese radars.

Remember that Japan doesn't look like pic 1, but rather pic 2 (according to their claims)
