As part of the ongoing Russian military exercises "Zapad-2025", footage of Tu-22M3 bombers dropping bombs has been published. The goal of the exercises is to disrupt the control system and destroy critical facilities. In the video, a Russian Tu-22M3 bomber drops OFAB-250-270 high-explosive fragmentation aviation bombs. The drop is carried out from altitudes of about 1,000 meters. The training and combat missions were carried out taking into account the combat experience gained.

BTR-22 suddenly shows up and gets caught in camera during the Zapad exercises in Belarus. The appearance of the type in exercises suggest the Russian MoD is very seriously considering this.

To sum it up, it's a rearranged BTR-82A with the engine in front, proper rear hatches, better armor all around and under against mines. Uses as much BTR-82A components as possible.

Compared to the BTR-87. The BTR-87 was a proposed project in 2015 to modernize the BTR-82 with a front engine and rear hatches. The original intention was an export model. The BTR-22 has lessons learned from the Ukraine War, featuring ECM modules for example, and uses the same combat module as the BTR-82A with the 2A72 30mm cannon and 7.62mm machine gun. The BTR-87 features a different combat module that uses the 2A42 cannon and ATAKA missiles. Same idea with a different interpretation based on the experience gained between the time gap from 2015 vs. 2023.

If you're asking what happened to the Bumerang, despite the Bumerang superior and next gen, it's more expensive and for now, the MoD wants cheap and easy to produce, utilizing as many components from the BTR-82A to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Pictures below show the Ballista module instead with the 2A42 cannon and two ATAKA missiles.

United Aircraft Corporation

▶️UAC has manufactured and delivered another batch of Su-34s to the Russian Aerospace Forces as part of fulfilling the State Defense Order.

“The Su-34 has proven itself to be a reliable and effective aircraft. The aircraft’s characteristics have been repeatedly confirmed in real combat conditions. This frontline bomber is capable of striking ground, surface, and air targets, operating under the most challenging enemy counteraction conditions. Pilots highly appreciate its maneuverability, survivability, and other qualities. Our aircraft manufacturing plants have significantly increased production of these aircraft and are making steady serial deliveries to the troops,” noted a representative of the State Corporation Rostec.

The fighter-bombers have undergone the full range of necessary ground and flight factory tests and have been handed over to the customer.

“As part of implementing the targeted tasks set by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation regarding the supply of weapons and equipment to the troops, the crews of the Aerospace Forces have accepted the Su-34 aircraft. This aircraft performs multifunctional tasks at any time—day and night, in any weather conditions, using various armaments. The crew feels confident and calm in it,” said a Su-34 pilot of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

“UAC enterprises consistently maintain a high pace of combat equipment production, fulfilling their obligations to the Russian Aerospace Forces on time. This month is a record for the number of aircraft delivered. Our employees at the plants, understanding the importance of delivering aviation equipment to the troops, not only ensure the necessary production volume but also continuously improve production processes to provide larger volumes of aircraft manufacturing, both for the tasks of the Russian Ministry of Defense and for fulfilling other production programs,” said UAC CEO Vadim Badeha.

The Su-34 fighter-bomber is designed to strike ground (surface) and air targets, infrastructure objects protected by air defense systems, and located at significant distances from the home airfield. The aircraft can also be used to perform aerial reconnaissance tasks.
