Looks like they put large fans in the radars on OW-50 for cooling purposes.

More appropriate to put this in the naval laser thread. Since there is no integrated radar it probably relies on the shipborne radar for long range target tracking and targeting. This also settles the question of whether the laser on 071 was a one off or in service weapon.

Saudi officials have asked Beijing to refine the SkyShield for use in hot and dusty climates. Until those improvements are made, the Silent Hunter laser remains limited for sustained deployment.
By contrast, the jamming elements of the SkyShield proved more reliable. The officer noted that “most of the drones engaged in the defended zone were neutralized not by the Silent Hunter but by the JN1101 counter-drone jamming system

What kind of idiot wrote this? Are they seriously suggesting we should use curved trajectory laser?

Rather than slamming it, the Saudi officials are literally asking for China to keep refining the weapon's performance until such time that it becomes suitable for hot and dusty climates.
I don't know if I'd call it refining, it's just a limitation of a laser-based system. I suppose they can get a better cooling solution, but dust and NLOS targets are always gonna be an issue. It's like asking for a Howitzer to be refined for close range targets, best just not to use it for that situation.

Better cooling solution is reasonable but I don't see how you can fix effectiveness in dusty condition except maybe modifications to dust proof the equipment itself via better seals etc.

You can improve resistance of optics against abrasion but if there is dust blocking the beam there is not much you can do. That’s why you need to integrate the laser with other systems as part of a defense network.

The title of the article is pretty much clickbait anyway.

When they're talking about "hot and dusty", first thing that comes to mind is to upgrade the cooling system and second thing is to ensure the equipment has redundant dust-tight seals. Let's not forget that the Saudi's American missile defense systems were easily defeated by cheap drones in the defense of their oil/gas infrastructure. Even if lasers are not optimal for foggy and dusty environments, they are likely still better than American missile defense in that context. It doesn't make sense to use half-million dollar missiles to try and shoot down thousand dollar drones. Especially when they don't even manage to achieve that...
