I had been hoping for a Pan vs. Chalmers rematch in the Men's 100m Freestyle final but alas it was not to be. Chalmers qualified fourth-fastest for the final at 47.36 seconds, which was faster than his 47.48 Silver medal performance last year at Paris, but he has never swum under 47 seconds and both Jack Alexy (USA) and David Popovici (Romania) did so in the Semifinal, so he will be hard pressed to secure a position on the podium. At 27 years old, he is the oldest of the finalists.

after the race:

Chalmers, who qualified for the 100m final from the same semi-final as Pan, said his Chinese rival was “probably struggling a little bit”.

“He said to me this morning after the heat, ‘I am tired’ after we touched the wall, so I’m assuming he’s not at his best,” said Chalmers.

“He had such a successful Olympic year last year. A lot of Australian Olympic athletes like myself have struggled the year after the Olympics, historically."

In other Australian swimming news, Kaylee McKeown and Mollie O'Callaghan have continued their winning form from Paris, winning Gold in the women's 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle finals respectively.

He is probably saving for the medley relay.
No, you don't throw away this type of gold medal for a team race days later. You don't attend a race to lose it. If you want to save up, drop out.
Many people on social media have pointed out that Pan is overweight this year and not in top shape.
This is the real reason he's not winning right now. Let's not pretend there's more to it.

The Chinese team always value a relay race more than individual race. Pan better regain his form, as his main Romanian competitor won the 100m freestyle race in 46.51s, which is close to Pan's world record.

World championships the year after the Olympics is the least exciting because some don’t attend and others out of form. They just want to rest post-Olympics.
2027 is when most will attend as they prepare for the 2028 Olympics. Olympics is when you need to be at your peak since that is the world stage where everyone is watching and where gold medals help the country top the medal table.

Chalmers did about as well as one could've hoped for in the Men's 100m Freestyle final, taking the Bronze medal. But with Pan, Popovici and Alexy all posting times under 47 seconds, the baton is clearly passing to a new generation.

World championships the year after the Olympics is the least exciting because some don’t attend and others out of form. They just want to rest post-Olympics.

Ariarne Titmus is an example of this for Australia. In Paris she won Gold in the 400m Freestyle and Silver in the 200m and 400m events, and was part of the Gold-winning Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay team. But she has chosen not to contest these World Aquatics Championships, saying that she is focused on Los Angeles 2028 which will be her last Olympics.

Lacking Titmus, Australia was not favoured to replicate their success from Paris with the Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay event last night, but they did, finishing 0.66s ahead of USA, with China taking the Bronze. Mollie O'Callaghan was visibly exhausted after the effort, so I hope she can recover in time for the 100m Freestyle final later today.

The Chinese team always value a relay race more than individual race.
1. Pan shows up visibly not in form.
2. Pan complains about being tired.
3. Pan produces a swim time a 1.4 seconds slower than his WR, fails to even qualify for the finals and says he doesn't know what happened.
4. No Olympic champion in history has won a 100m freestyle at the world's 1 year after winning the Olympics.

You: He's just hiding his form. He values the relay more than the individual.

He's not going to. There's no magic involved. "Regaining his form" is a goal for the next Olympic cycle, not the next 3 days.
