A good encapsulation of why the American military is crumbling. If you want a stronger military in 5 years, raise the defense budget. If you want a stronger military in 5-20 years, increase investments in R&D, industry, and infrastructure. If you want a stronger military in 20+ years, invest in education.
China is one of the few countries in the world which plans in the long term. Instead of using an arbritrary budget like that, they're going to look at their needs and how to address their needs. Increasing the budget is only one of the solutions to address these needs, so it's not necessarily the most important factor.China should at least raise military spending to 2% of GDP I think.
It's simple. Americans don't think about the subject at all. The American military has been completely unchallenged since the fall of the Soviet Union so American thinkers just automatically think that this will continue forever without regard to the situation on the ground. This same thinking pervades a lot of American thought about China as well. China used to be a technologically backward country and its military modernization didn't even start until after the Gulf War. In the minds of many Americans, China's modernizations haven't occurred at all which is why there's still a prevailing idea that China is only able to copy; never to innovate.
Because the American Hegemony requires the backing of the world’s most powerful military. The US military has to maintain the image in order to keep the charade going.
There's some truth to this, but most of the American thinkers I've seen seem to be true believers. The only American military commander of note who seems to understand what's going on and is simultaneously unable to say anything about it is Paparo.Because the American Hegemony requires the backing of the world’s most powerful military. You would think that professional China observers would be above this nonsense, but this doesn't seem to be the case! It's just intellectual laziness displayed by way of analytical inertia and wishful thinking. For example, the last time the west got a good look at Russian weapons was at the end of the cold war, and they turned out to be pretty good. As such, the Russian military is thought to be a peer competitor, and on the even of the Ukraine war, after 30+ years of relative industrial decline, 30+ years of military budget shrinking from ~20% to ~5% of GDP, the assessment hadn't changed much at all. On the reverse side, the last time the west got a good look at the Chinese military was in '79 against Vietnam. Almost half a century later, 46 years of meteoric industrial expansion, technological advances, and organizational modernizations later, it's still thought of as a second rate military with copycat hardware.
I see it as a binary situation.
1. If the USA can apply more military power in the region, then the First Island Chain could become a stranglehold surrounding China.
2. If China can apply more military power, then the First Island Chain islands will be under blockade, and rendered militarily useless.
Remember the First Island Chain islands are a bunch of small, scattered, isolated islands which are very densely populated and with few natural resources.
But you have to remember another calculation. It's geographical advantage. Who have this geographical advantage to the area east of Miyako Islands. To me, it's US and their allies. But maybe someone can convince me if it's not.
