What are the reasons for China not being harder on Israel? It’s of little economic importance, and sanctions would increase chinas popularity in the mid east and ease tensions in xinjiang.

How would going against Israel ease tension in Xinjiang? The so called ”issues” in Xinjiang were manufactured by the West.
maybe they’re made worse by the west, but there have been issues with terrorism, as I’m sure you know.

There's nowhere for that escalation to go other than shouting matches at the UN so there's no point in starting it now. When the US and Western power is supplanted and China is able to escalate to ultimatums including economic and/or physical destruction of Israel should it ignore warnings to correct its behavior, it becomes worth it to revisit how tough we should be on them. In the mean time, every problem that distracts the US/West from trying to stop China's rise is a good problem for us.

It certainly isn’t good for people being massacred, and I don’t think BYD needs to open up dealerships there. Without China, Israel will struggle more, being unable to buy Chinese phones, computers, and other consumer goods. China will not be hurt by doing that.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say sanctions "don't work" at all, they're definitely overrated, and just about never deliver as advertised.

TBH, the royals and autocrats governing Israel's Arab neighbors "don't give two fucks" about the plight of the Palestinians. Their subjects care a little more, but will quickly forget whatever good China may do for their cause celebre du jour, and then proceed to complain about China not doing more.

Without China, Israel will struggle more, being unable to buy Chinese phones, computers, and other consumer goods. China will not be hurt by doing that.

Sanctioning Israel is absolutely not worth the effort. In fact, Chinese sanctions will do more good than harm upon the Israelis, as such measures will provide pretext for significant Western economic aid.

The strife between Israel and its neighbors — be it Iran, the Houthis, Hezbollah or the Palestinians — simply aren't China's problems; and interference into these conflicts, especially coercive intervention would run counter to the

. To quote Xi Dada:
We must jointly uphold the “golden rule” of non-interference, and jointly oppose acts of imposing one’s will on others, stoking bloc confrontation, creating small circles, and forcing others to pick sides.

China will continue to discourage the Houthis from targeting vessels beneficially owned by Chinese interests, as well as to do what it can to keep hydrocarbons flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, beyond that, it's best for both the Chinese government and enterprises to sustain trade with all sides while they "resolve their differences."
