It's not at all realistic to expect the current set of political leaders to go against the entirety of U.S. led interests without getting annihilated in the process. The Canadian security apparatus and State are in my view littered with U.S. spies and maligned influence that ensure Canada doesn't deviate too far from its purpose.

That is the essence of how liars work. You double check you loose, you give them any chance, you loose. The only way of dealing these people is "once a liar, forever a liar".

Pretty soon, we are going to hear the Indians start demanding for the rest of Xizang. India had its chance when China was more agreeable, and it went to war anyway. So that opportunity is gone, and should never return.

China isn't interested in any kind of conflict right now. At the current rates of progress, the PLA will overtake the US military around 2035. Any war threatens to push that date farther and farther behind. It's just not worth it. Yes, there's always some danger with negotiating with India, but I'm pretty sure that the Chinese negotiators know just how untrustworthy India is. As such, I don't expect the negotiations to be very fruitful, but there's always some hope. After all, China has managed to settle their borders with every country other than India and Bhutan, and finishing the whole set can be very handy in the future. Right now, India isn't a threat and they're in a weak enough position that they might actually take some sort of deal.

India will make a lot more sense when you understand that what they need the most is validation. They need to be seen a great power, so you can see all the chest thumping whenever India manages to achieve something that the big boys do. If it means stretching the truth, they'll absolutely do it.

And the funny thing is, while China's style was very different, it used to need validation in the same way. Way back in the '80s, it'd be headline news any time a foreign leader would pay attention to China. Back then, it used to be mostly small countries in Africa, but it was still treated as a big deal.
