F-55 should be a twin engine F-35 with 2xF414 variants. I expect a 25k-26k lbf engine.

The reality is that it doesn't mean much coming from Donald Trump. By F-55, he could have meant to be talking about the F-47... or maybe there is some larger aircraft in development called the F-55 and he wasn't supposed to say anything about it. Alternatively, the F-55 could be the designation for the F/A-XX. Who knows?

Outside of that, an F-22 upgrade is kind of interesting, but again it could have been something mentioned at some point during a briefing and he is just repeating it even though they decided not to pursue that path.

F-35 upgrades are well known so that is really nothing at all.

I have a question:

- In what ways would F/A-XX be different from F-47? Speculatively.
- F/A-XX could have a land variant for USAF, it would have been so much more efficient?
- In China's case, we see J-36 and J-XDS to be dramatically different platforms.
- While, J-XDS, F-47, FA-XX all look roughly to be platforms of similar class. So it makes sense China pursues two very different platforms. I also think J-XD would have both Naval and Land platforms. Now here, Im confused, why is US pursuing two different platforms, which are of similar class? They seem to face funding issues every few months on these platforms.

Please feel free to correct any of my assumptions or opinionate on it.

From what I’ve heard FA-XX was supposed to be a lot more focused on strike aspect.

- The navy does not prioritize stealth as much as the Airforce but requires a long range and large payload to replace it's aging fleet of Super Hornets, basically they want a souped-up stealth version of F-14. So I guess F/A-XX would likely be larger than NGAD to give it a high combat radius and be much more strike oriented. Also, the navy also don't seem to give too much of a fuck about next generation engine and stuff they just want something fast and cheap so apparently they'll be using a engine derived from an older design. F/A-XX being triservice would IMO just become JSF 2: Electric Boogaloo. Requirements are too different for them to just stuff it in a single aircraft and still have it perform as well. For China, they made the J-36 probably of one very unique requirement that is to maintain air superiority within the first and second island chain which require extreme range. The J-XDS seems to be a cheaper alternative for a general fighter for the PLAAF since J-36 is surely gonna cost a lot and you probably don't need a bunch of J-36s for stuff like homeland defense or short range missions and in general lower end stuff IMO.
