While the USG doesn't need people to keep buying its debt (by foreigners or not) is correct in that USD denominated Treasury debt is not at risk of default, as the Fed can keep printing and buying to finance the USG. But doing so is inflationary, which is why govts prefer debt financing, which is not inflationary compared to QE. For other countries, there's a limit of how much one can keep borrowing as eventually the yield would become unbearable. Fortunately for the US, as USD is the world reserve currency, that limit is much bigger or practically unlimited for as long as the USD is the WRC, supported by 800 overseas military bases, petrodollar, SWIFT, and other hegemonic measures.
That said, as interest rates for the private sector borrowing are usually in lockstep with Treasury yields, if those get too high, it would be very bad for the economy. No govt wants a bad economy.
Remember QUAD? What ever happened to that? Wasn't that supposed to be hyped as something for China to fear?
