Re: New Generation Fighter

Well we are at it... I was wondering what is the typical projected lifespan for the Chinese Engines as compared to the western engines. This is important as it will also translate to the overall lifespan of the 5th generation fighters of the chinese.

Re: New Generation Fighter

WS-15 was design to replace Ws-9, according to past article, Xian aircraft co. who exam the engine, claim spey engine was basically late 50's early 60's technology.and they make it clear, there ultimate plan was some sort of "F-404" equivalent.

Yes, thats exactly what I am trying to say several days earlier in this thread.

J-XX's engine is not codenamed as WS-15

"WS-15" is just the unofficial "nickname" for this J-XX engine, this name become more misleading when actually "WS-15" has been used to name other types of engines.

Anyway, "WS-15" is still the most popular unofficial name for J-XX's engine.

As for the real name for J-XX's engine, as far as I know, we get no clue, since all official article where discussed this engine briefly, always refered this engine to as:

"the next generation high-power, high-thrust/weight ratio turbinefan engine" or "the Engine has a thrust/weight beyond 10" or the "the 4th generation turbinefan engine" etc, typical official style "naming".

I don't understand. AVIC's own engine chart says that the WS-15 is a "4th generation" T/W 10:1 engine.

Re: New Generation Fighter

The chance is if there's anyone gets the job of developing a medium thrust turbofan, Xi'an is indeed the most likely candidate. As to the codings, would there be confusions arising from the PLAAF coding system and the AVIC system?

Btw the high thrust turbofan for JXX is developed by China Gas Turbine Establishment, their website is

Re: New Generation Fighter

Regarding the WS-15, well there seem to be some confusion. Many of us thought was a T/W=10 17,000kg class "large thrust" turbofan (and has another 8 - 10 years until it sees production) but 70092 recently said WS-15 is indeed a 9500 kgf "medium thrust" engine -

and the "large thrust" is not WS-15 but something else..

There is also this (WS-13?) -

Now I am confused

the 9500kgf engine is only GTE's conceptual design or preliminary design, and there is no project approval to date.

FWS-15 engine's performance is in the 150kN thrust class.
the picture below is displaying a series of core engines with the inlet corrected airflows in the range of 5kg/s to 30kg/s .
left to right:
5kg/s(WS-500,700kgf engine...),15kg/s(12A core),20kg/s(FWS-13 derivative core),30kg/s(FWS-15--T/W ratio 10)

hey Maya, I haven't seen any news recently on WS-13. Is this project actually going anywhere?
