Trust is hard to construct and easy to destroy. With notorious bad quality and fraud in the past, it is hard for the Chinese to believe in domestic drugs and foods. It takes a long time to gain trust and increase quality checks from the Chinese government.
You remind me of a New York Times article in Jan 2020 claiming, correctly, that trust in government is the most important part in fighting a pandemic, and Chinese people's lack of trust in Beijing is what will prevent China from combating it.
That didn't age well.
If people who trust China lives and people who don't dies, that's just natural selection

interesting enough, CNN doing their reporting on cancer drugs from 康方生物 (Akeso), ignoring the usual hit job portion, they at least brought on a lady who was fair.

It's absolutely embarrassing that these professionals in Beijing still value foreign drugs more than domestic ones.
At the risk of being "that guy" for a moment, what your describing happens all the time. The American science community was largely dismissed internationally, until the late 1800s when American physicist Robert W. Wood debunked the "N-Rays" discovery of French scientist Dr. Prosper-Rene Blondt. Or more recently DeepSeek's success shattered many illusions of Chinese data science being inferior to the West both at home and abroad. To the point it seriously erode the stigma of tech firms having all-Chinese researchers with no foreigners.

Belief is powerful, and success begets success. Give it time and things will change. After all this is China we're talking about.

I don't get the analogy. Why do you need an electron microscope to find a sesame seed?
A Quantum Gravimeter looks at very small things, similar to electron microscope. Sesame seed is small and hard to find in a room, like pockets of ore underground.
Can it scan of underwater?
A lot of grant proposals and papers justify research of quantum gravimeter for submarine detection, not sure if they really work in practice.

To be completely fair, they did at least acknowledge the trendlines.

“China is definitely getting there,” said Robert Voyle, chief executive of the Aviation Services Research Centre at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. “They’re not quite on the high-end CNC yet, but they will be.”

Regarding CNN's hit-piece against China's cancer drug, here is Arnaud Bertrand's take:
You could apply the exact same methodology to malign any new drug, no matter how revolutionary they are:

1) Show screenshots of anonymous negative social media posts
2) Ask leading questions to random pedestrians like "would you trust a new drug from an unknown company?"
3) Mention completely unrelated health scandals to make a negative association

Job done!
