You know - Back then, I'd say that the PLAN should aim for a combined firepower output capability that is around 80% of the US&LC navies in the WestPac.

Now, after seeing how the Ozzies reacted to the 1st ever live-fire naval exercises conducted by the PLAN in their frontyard (including that one particular member of this forum), ironically forgetting that they themselves have been doing the literally the same thing with their master and lackey buddies right on China's doorstep and frontyard for countless times...

I'd argue that the PLAN should aim to become the most capable and the most powerful navy that has ever graced the world's oceans.

Yes, I mean it.

Did PLAN passed Indonesia territorial sea water, with permission of course ? if it is the case, thats very interesting development
Aussie warships have sailed up to the South sea and Taiwan strait, assuming they went the same route except in the opposite direction. So either it must have been international waters all the way or Indonesia must have allowed both China and Australia the same right for passing its territorial waters. We cannot determine if Indonesia has picked its side.

Simplest and most likely explanation is that both of them exercised innocent passaage through Indonesian territorial waters.

Your first proposition is stupid in first place. To grow from from 10% to 80% of US is herculean undertaking. It requires 800% growth. 80 to 100% is trivial. 25% growth. Why spend all the effort and stop at 80%? Finish the job, it is trivial.

There are sea lanes for peaceful passage, this isn't anything special

This event should be viewed with the greater Pacific Islands and Indonesia/East Timor in mind. I think what this will achieve vis-a-vis AU and NZ is quite questionable ("oh how do you like it now" is not really constructive imo). It will very likely result in things heading in a negative direction. However, a mere tit-for-tat "FONOP" is also insufficient since the PLAN can't sail around AU/NZ with the same frequency

The fact that China can only deploy ships but not AWACS to patrol around Australia or Canada or US,when their ASW planes can patrol around China all the time, signifies the importance of oversea bases.

US allies can use Okinawa or Philippine bases to operate planes around China, but China cannot do the same due to lack of oversea bases near those countries
Only good if bases are defensible.

Recently, a submarine detachment of the Navy in the Northern Theater Command organized its own submarines to carry out regular training exercises in the mission sea area. During the exercise, the participating submarines successfully collected noise characteristics of anti-submarine aircraft, hydrological environment parameters and other data, effectively enhancing the combat level of the force.
