I installed Xiaohongshu to see what the big fuss was about and was immediately flooded with videos of American and Eastern European women (surprisingly many Russian and Belarussian women there) and Chinese guys lusting for them in the comments. Some interesting content but mostly juvenile stuff. Not my thing. I quickly un-installed it. While it is amusing to see Americans sticking it to their government by migrating to another Chinese owned app, I don't think many of them will permanently stay there because from what I understand Xiaohongshu doesn't really offer creators as much opportunities to make money from their content like TikTok did. "RedNote doesn't pay creators based on the number of views or followers they have, so they rely on product commissions to make money. The lack of an analog to TikTok's Creator Rewards could be a deterrent to profits". I also suspect Xiaohongshu won't be as effective indoctrination tool as TikTok due to its strict community guidelines.

Indian news channels /YTetc have gone berserk about all these Americans etc flocking to XHS and the like-it's a massive hit on thosejaihindjeets egoes and supposed computer capabilities-6 gen fighters is one thing but now software/apps?Too much for these indonuts.Chyyyyyyna!
It definitely is a massive hit on the ego of the country.
For years they go on about being an IT powerhouse, software driven economy, H1Bs are mostly Indians and pushing FAANG companies to the top, etc. It's something they genuinely felt they had an edge on China. However, despite all the talent, there is not a single Indian "Killer App". Then China has TikTok, but they took solace in the likely US ban as a sign of weakness. So instead of Americans picking up the pieces of TikTok, you had another Chinese app which doesn't even have a proper English interface go viral. A very bitter pill.

Xiaohongshu is great for other types of content too. I mostly see posts about food, gaming, architecture, and dramas. If Xiaohongshu can release a functional translation feature in a reasonable timeframe, I can see the app becoming mainstream. The recommendation system is much better than Instagram’s, in my opinion. Its long-term success is far from guaranteed at this point, though.

I haven’t seen many horny guys on there, but then again, I’m not on there to look at girls.
