Since OS is transparent, the only possible backdoor is HW that is some part of the chip has functions that is not revealed to developers. A HW based backdoor is just a program stored inside the CPU chip instead of external RAM, an useful backdoor able to communicate with NSA is going to be big taking large area of circuitry that is impossible to hide. Backdoor of small footprint preventing from being discovered will have to rely on external SW that is OS backdoor or OS bug or App backdoor which then defeat the advantage of HW backdoor.

More importantly, CPU can not talk directly to NSA, it has to rely on network chips and communication SW stacks which are exposed and transparent, such CPU backdoor is like a genious being locked inside a room without window and door, it can't do anything.

For android, the source is open for the manufacture to examine line by line which they should be doing. I assume China has some app stores that scan thru the code looking for security risk but any software can be a virus/backdoor. I try to install the minum and only popular software for anything i own.

Not sure how you backdoor a microchip, but i am sure once China can produce advance chips in sufficient quanities, China will only use Chinese chips for internal markets.

Which is as transparent as SW from app store and can be easily examined. Firmware is just compiled native HW instructions (assembly code), it is not much difficult to see what it is doing than byte code of Android apps. The true challenge to find backdoor is not about wether it is assembly code, byte code or C code in plain text, it is how difficult to access it.

There are lots of people making hacked firmwares for old android phones in order to upgrade to later OS version, such as LineageOS. There are many deassembers to help that hacking, it is to translate assembly code back to C code or any other languages that is easy to read.

Isn’t that convenient to delay it. Just last year they forced farmers to sell their land to the state or it will be seized.
