The first 2 words of your reply answers it all ;).

in all honest F-50 is carrying over alot of baggage as far as structure weights goes. they don't have a choice if they don't want to spend $$$.

F-5 for all intents and purpose is a new fighter than F-5.


as for making L-15 into a new fighter bomber. why not.
basically powerplant wise it is already in same class as IDF I think.

I don't think its a money situation at all, the Koreans are spending $7.68 billion dollars on acquiring 60 fighters for the FX-III tender and $5 billion to develop the KAI KF-X fighter project.

As for the T-38 and F-5, they use the SAME basic airframe, the only external physical differences are the cockpit, nose, intake, leading edge root extensions, and wing fences and rails.

The L-15 would be an interesting idea for an attack aircraft I agree, its a light aircraft but it can't possibly be worse than the Q-5 series which suffers from so many limitations

Does that mean it is easier to make a carrier capable version? Some post several months ago about the 6th prototype claimed such a thing would be possible (an "official source" -- I don't remember which). I remember the news about the fifth prototype's first flight mentioned it took off in less than 100 meters.

IIRC earlier in this thread the British Hawk trainer was mentioned together with the US T-45 aircraft carrier trainer derived from it. Quite a lot of reinforcement was necessary because the carrier aircraft needs to cope with much higher vertical touch down speed.

Latest pictures on Huitong's Chinese Military Aviation site show that the JL-9H (naval carrier-trainer version), definitely has DSI bulge and leading-edge slats, it appears that Guizhou has decided to improve the beast.

As more of these improvements are incorporated into the naval trainer, its seems logical to suppose that they will also find their way into the PLAAF's Advanced Jet-Trainer version.

Doesn't this ultimately lead to Guizhou attempting to create an ultra-low cost fighter - the last of the MiG-21's?

I have the same perception in mind for some time ago... In fact, a single-seat version of the JL-9 is quite attractive for a low-budget country looking for a cheap, BVR-capable fighter like the F-5 Tiger III.
