Huge move in the automotive design world. China's MG acquires the services of former Volkswagen star designer Jozef Kabaň. Kabaň also spent time at RollsRoyce. VW recently saw another former design head, Klaus Zyciora, jump ship to Changan Automobile last year.
China has no shortage of domestic artistic talent, why do the big brands want to use foreign designers? They should not make a VW skinned Chinese EV, but Chinese in and out.

its just one name.. in R&D team you have hundreds/thousands of researchers. and mostly are native. not only in automobile but in all high tech industries. its a new wave of young Chinese talent..

for example, last year BYD hired 30,000+ young talent in China..

It's not even R&D, but the point is still applicable

IMO, those "big names" are usually for marketing. Like a fashion house has the head guy, but basically they just do approvals for everything that is not a flagship or flashy concept

In China, you have a few things going on that held back some domestic designers from reaching top billing
1 - Domination by JVs up until the last few years.
2 - State-owned carmakers are conservative by nature
3 - Indie carmakers did not have a big appetite for risk either because of less financial leeway

So really you only have the last few years to really develop the homegrown talent independently. Of course there are a few well-known Chinese designers that have worked for the big companies as well that were referenced before, Pinky Lai and Li Tianyuan.

I hope it's the last round of hiring high profile foreign talents to head design teams, and the Chinese designers would finally be good and confident enough to lead in the near future.
