Re: US Coast Guard Recaptilization, Deep Water Project

Well, they will be a very good Coast Guard Cutter design. But no modular mission packages for heavier tasks like ASW, MCM, or attacking other ships of any similar size..

But they will have the 57mm main gun and some form of CIWS, they will also be able to launch and retrieve both the Short Range Prosecutor and the larger Long Range Interceptor RHIBs, they will also have a helo pad and hanger, and they will have a great sensor suite.

So, really, they are patrol cutters suitable for maritime security, anti-piracy, interdiction, inspections, rescues, and, in wartime, low intensity escort duties. Really a very similar mission to the larger National Security Cutters, except these are medium endurance and not nearly as long ranged as those larger vessels. There will also be a lot more of them, twenty-five of these as opposed to eight of the Legend Class National security Cutters.

Thanks Jeff. I also just noticed that the Sentinel Class seems to be missing or not having a heli pad, is this true?

Yes, that is correct. There is no helo pad.

But there was never meant to be. The Island Class cutters it is replacing also have no helo pad. Here's a picture of the Island Class that the Sentinel Class will replace.

Though it lacks a Heli pad It has a spot to allow use of embarked boats.

Yes...that is correct. The Sentinel Class Fast Response Cutters will be able to launch the Short Range Prosecutor craft.

The SRP is rigid hull inflatable (RHI) boat an is 7 meters long, and a high speed launch designed to be launched from cutters, at speed, from that stern launching ramp. It is powered by water-jets, for intercepting and boarding target vessels. It mounts a radar and special shock-proof seats, and can travel at 30 knots.

Now, the Legend Class National Defense Cutters and the proposed Offshore Patrol Cutters will each have, in addition to their helo pad and hanger, two stern ramps. One for the SRP RHI, and the other for the larger, Long Range Interceptor (LRI) craft. The LRI is an 11 meter long craft, has a small deck house, is also is an RHI with shock absorber seats, with radar, powered by water jets, and can travel at 35 knots. It also has mounts for machine guns and grenade launchers.

Outstanding Jeff, the Coast Guards white/recognition orange paint is definetly cool on the traditional cutters, and C-130s, as well as the awesome choppers.

Thanks for the thread Jeff. Say do you think the US Coast Guard will ever possess a submarine for search and rescue purposes in the future?

Lieutenant General
I have a hard time picturing the need of a Coastie Sub for SAR, Interdiction perhaps.

Well with ever growing immense size of cargo ships and offshore oil platforms, a coastal submarine could provide immediate search and rescue for sunken platforms and ships that won't be hinder by weather, like the one incident we've seen in South Korea with the sinking of a ferry ship.

Great stuff !

I think Hamilton and Legend Cutters class can carry Harpoon, 8 definitely, in War time.
One Sea Hawk could enter in the hangar ?
