Does anyone watch Prison Break? :D

"More than 2.1 million people are in jail in the USA at any one time; that is about one in 140 Americans, or as many people as live in Namibia, or nearly five Luxembourgs - and it is a number that continues to rise..."

Whaat? There's no freaking way this can be accurate. 1.3 billion people and only 1.5 million commit crimes serious enough for jail? 7 times less jailed people per 100 000 than USA? I bet the CCP published some fabricated numbers. Honestly I don't think the Chinese judicatory system is this forgiving

Agreed. Either the incarcerated persons number is completely false, or China has been VERY commonly using the death penalty.

I don't know if the numbers is correct or not, but I do know China have a much lower crime rate than US. So seven time less jailed people is not impossible, you have to understand US have the biggest and highest prisoners population.

I think these numbers are accurate. China has a much lower crime rate than US. In my 21 years life in China, I had hardly seen any one I knew ever in prison. Small crimes, such as burglary may be more frequently seen in big cities, but as the previous post said, these people ended up in police station instead of prison. I once lived in Beijing for three years. I had three of my bicycles stolen, but no robbery whatsoever. I felt pretty safe walking in midnight in Beijing. It is even safer in rural areas.

I am currently living in a small town in US with only 40,000 people, but I have seen murders, rape and robbery appear in local newspaper several times, nobody walks on street in midnight in my town except drunk people, and this city is still rated as one of the best places to live in US!

Are you sure? I know some cities can be very very dangerous, like Guangzhou. Then there are some better cities like Shanghai. But seeing all those counterfeits and robberies, I am rather amazed at the low crime rate........
Then there are the highway robbers. (Does anyone know if they rob only the highway, or the whole place?)

Maybe I am biased, since Guangzhou is the America of China.....

China is generally a safe country, with a fairly low but increasing crime rate. The crime is concentrate on major cities, the countryside and small cities are much safer. Pickpockets target tourists at sightseeing destinations, open-air markets, airports, and in stores, Robberies have occurred more frequently in many cities especially in Guangzhou. There have been some reports of robberies and assaults along remote mountain highways, usually they stopped a bus and forced people to give them money and expensive items.

Guangzhou has the worst reputation in China, nowadays people are calling Guangzhou "crime city". I heard of a lot of news regarding robberies in train station. So yes using the Guangzhou as comparison is not a good idea, but even if you did. Guangzhou is still much safe than some of major cities in US. In Phildelphia or LA, the murders and robberies rate should be much higher. And as far as I knew many major cities in the North of China is pretty safe, and you would not find much crime in small cities or county.

Maybe in next five and ten years China will face more problem with crimes, since organized gangs group have increasing their present in many area. If they had sucessfully recruit more people and bribe the government officials, I foresee major crime rate increase.
