Visit to NUAA

When I visited NUAA (literally across the street from my grandparents' place) on my three week vacation in China I snapped some pictures of old planes I found across the campus. Thought that you guys might be interested. Take note that I only had my phone with me at the time so the qualities of the photos aren't that great.

Old An-24 given as a gift to the school in 97 or 98. I remember playing with the propellers as a kid.

Photos of the old J-5 outside of the on-campus Museum. They took the wings and the engines off. The guns are still there though.

Z-8 Helicopter. Must've been a recent addition since it wasn't there when I went back in 08.

J-8I. Also a recent addition. This plane is in relatively good conditions compared with other aircraft on display since it managed to retain everything except for the engines. Judging from the paint job it might've been used for test flight. A truly rare piece considering that only around 30-50 J-8Is were ever built.

One of the Fire-bee reconnaissance drones that crashed in China.

H-5 bomber. One of the oldest displays around. The fuselage is pretty much the only thing left. They really need to clean up the dust/graffiti on this one.

J-7. One of the actual museum displays. Regrettably I couldn't enter the museum since it was sealed off until October. Frankly I've never seen that place open before.

Some turbo-jet engines inside the museum.

Simply amazing ! I wish to be there some day to.

Besides that the quality of the images - especially when made only with a phone - is impressive.

But - I hope You don't mind - let me add a few comments, corrections & one question.

1. the helicopter is not a Z-8 but one of the rare prototypes of the Harbin Z-6.

2. the J-8I is "only" one of the original J-8 with the forward-hinging canopy ala J-7 (sans letter) !

3. Close to the J-8 and J-7 there was ... and I hope still is a strange drone on display ! Was it still there and - hopefully - do You have an image of that thing ?

Cheers & thanks a lot for posting these images,
Deino :p

The drone in question is a Changhong-1, which I believe is reverse-engineered from the firebee in my photos.

Speaking of Bei Hang, I went there back in my last trip but that place was closed during the holiday week...half expected but the least they could've done is post an announcement on the website, like the one outside Beijing posted their holiday week's opening hours, which helps a lot.
