U.S. moves to sell howitzers to Pakistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration said on Friday it tentatively planned to let Pakistan buy 115 155mm self-propelled howitzer artillery pieces as well as related gear and services valued at up to $56 million.
The sale of M109A5 howitzers would not affect the basic military balance in the region, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice to Congress.

The big guns at issue are in the U.S. Army's current inventory, said Jose Ibarra, an agency spokesman. The total value of the deal, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $56 million, the notice to Congress said.

Such notice is required by law. Congress has the power to block such a government-to-government arms sale but has never done so. No contractor would be involved in the deal.

Pakistan currently operates an earlier-generation self-propelled howitzer, the M109A2. It would use the newer model to re-equip existing units and retire older artillery pieces, the Pentagon said.

The sale would help Pakistan enhance "internal command and control of the mountain range bordering its country," the notice said.

It said a U.S. technical assistance team and a U.S. government quality assurance team would spend a year to check out the howitzers. In addition, a U.S. technical assistance team would take part in "program management and technical reviews" twice annually for two weeks at a time, the Pentagon said.

115 guns is A LOT of artillery. It should help even out the imbalance with India. Quite odd that the PA hasn't opted for the PLZ-45. I wonder if PA is thinking about buying it.

SPGs are not so useful in these days, Pakistan must have some good MBRLs !!

Dude, SPG's are VERY deadly. I agree that Pakistan must have good MBRLs as well, but NEVER underestimate the power of SPG's. Just ask Gollevanien. He served in artillery for quite a while and he can tell you exactly how important SPG's are in a modern military. Why do you think that the American military is making more SPG's for its forces?

why not plz-45? its a very good design, and can be tailored for pakistans environment. not to mention it would be half as costly as the m109. it would probably come with other deals with chinba aswell.

why not the plz-55? its even more advnaced. pakistan can be the first costomer to preorder the gun before it comes out.

Yeah MRSL cannot never (or at least with these foreseeings) replace tube artillery. Precission strike has been artillery's field for centuryes and sofar no other cost effective way to deliver surcigal strikes with such tenddency...And with APU coming into picture, normal towed artillery have raisen into value. Artillery is the key element of land warfare, without it any MBT formations are usesles so good for Pakistan for choosing this proven system (thougth this wasent the 52cal version?) Anyway, whos Pakistan armys artillery in general, any new towed systems?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Kuwait was extremely impressed with the system. In my opinion, Pakistan may end up buying both the PLZ-45 or 55 and the American system. It would just be a way to counter American threats against sanctions. The PLZ-45 does have laser guided munitions and that itself can give huge capabilities to the Pakistani Army if pursued. Here is a list of Pakistan's current inventory (this probably hasn't been updated, but it should give you a good idea):

I think the next land system Pakistan will buy is probably going to be an MRLS system. I just hope its the WS-1B because it is the longest range MRLS system out in the market plus it may be cheaper than some American systems.

Turkey bought the WS-1B?

I prefer the A-100 though. Heavier warhead, more rockets per run, and 180km also in the future.
Or the WM-80, which has 80km range and 5-8 minutes reloading time.

As for the M109 deal, yea, I too would've pick the PLZ-45/05 instead. But I guess the sale is more of a diplomacy move?
