According to a few post in Chinese BBS, the PLAN is rumored in trialing out new pennant number painting scheme on some non-principle surface combatants - departing from the current solid-black font, the "new" scheme will be in the same fashion as seen on western navies' ships.

To say the very least, anything posted on April 1st and from China should be viewed with suspicion, but with at least 10 days gone by and nobody laughed "April Fool" then there could be something to it...?

Not April Fool's, ESF is selected as the test subject for the new pennant number. So far three ships have been identified with new number.

From CDF.

Dongqin 870, Dongshui 646, and DD132.

Even more confusing the PLAAF is also "playing" around with a new numbering sequence for their re-organised/restructures Brigades.

It is now official that all current and future PLAN vessels will shift to using the new 3D white pennant number painting style. Information came from the PLA General Armaments Department and was recently announced on CCTV.

Apparently the white numbers we see earlier were trials. The proposal to make it the new standard has just been approved. It was also mentioned in the news that the new painting standard include 10 numerals and 38 Chinese characters.

So it's official that this will be implemented fleet wide - use of Chinese characters means including non-combatants (rescue ships, for example).

By next year it will be more difficult for a layman to tell the difference between a PLAN ship and those of Western navies...

So what's the purpose of changing to USN style? I would expect it has some sort of advantage other than simply "look western".

Primary reason cited by PLAN is that it looks modern and professional, secondary reason is that this is a low visibility scheme.

I would have said low visibility as primary and modern/professional as secondary would make a whole lot more sense for a military vessel.

According to the news report, the key purpose is to update the standard font not only in-line to international standard, but also because the system needs updating - some of the PLAN ships pennant numbers including Chinese characters as well, thus the new standard fonts also included 38 Chinese characters. And it's not just the fonts, the position of the pennant numbers also modified.

We should see this new standard in good measures from 2013 onwards.
