I have been reading an article on the possibility of thousands of Taiwanese immigrating to USA Canada Australia etc, because of a fear in a drop off in wage and living standards over time,if the KMT and even closer economic ties with China come about.
I dont know what effect it would have on the Presidential elections, but the newspaper article mentions that people are returning to Taiwan to vote.

This raises a question with me in that should people who have emigrated be allowed to vote in the elections.

Taiwanese wage and living standard will drop if Taiwan DID NOT HAVE closer economic with China. Many Taiwanese businessmen vote for KMT because they think that KMT can improve business situation for them. Many of my Taiwanese friends in Canada and US return to Taiwan and Mainland China because they CAN NOT find a job in North America. They can't even find descent job in relatively better Canadian economy, why would they find job in the US nearing its recession? Most of the people i know emigrating to Australia and north America is due to lifestyle preference (e.g. less polution, more social security etc), but not for Job. Could you post the article you mentioned. What ever is stated there is the opposite of my observation and understanding of the situation.

Unfortunately I am unable to do so because its a soft copy article written for and published in the New Zealand Herald on March 3rd. and targeted towards New Zealanders.
However I will try to give you a bit more background.

The Writer of this article and her Doctor Husband immigrated io NZ in the 1990s and because they were unable to find work, they returned to Taiwan in 2002.In the 1990s thousands of Taiwanese immigrated to NZ annually, only to become disillusioned by the unwelcoming populace, and unable to find work many returned home. The current inflow from Taiwan is about 12 a year. She is now suggesting there will now be another big outflow of people from Taiwan, should a closer union with the mainland come about with a KMT presidential win. She suggests a lowering income level and living standards will provide the trigger for this second migration of affluent Taiwanese overseas, but New Zealand should not expect too many because of the negativity about New Zealand in many Taiwanese minds.
