Status of indigenously built medium-range AAM ?

Today I stumbled into a headline at Janes Defence concerning a chinese order for 1,500 Vympel RVV-AE AA-12 'Adder' advanced radar active-homing air-to-air missiles. :coffee:
Until now it is estimated (what I've read at Sinodefence) that the Chinese Airforce has about 200 of these advanced missiles in inventory.

If indeed the procurement of additional missiles will be finalized then I'm a bit curious about the status of indignously built AAM's (roughly) comparable in the same class of the AA-12 'Adder'
Yes, I do mean the following AAM's : SD-10 and PL-12. :)

Does anyone have recent information about the progress or setbacks of these programs ?

I'm guessing that the Adder missiles that were purchased are going to be used on the Flankers. The inventory before (which you said was 200) was quite small if a conflict broke out between Taiwan and China. The SD-10 is going to be used for the J-10, not the Flankers so it would make sense to have relatively large stockpiles of both SD-10 and Adder missiles.

I am pretty sure that the SD-10 is advancing quite well. The only two countries allowed to operate the missiles will probably be Pakistan and China so that right there says a lot about the sensitivity of the technology.

It would make sense if ALL types of Flankers could fire/operate the Adder missile, but as far as I know only the SU-30 MKK/MKK2 is capable of operating that particular missile.
That's a large stockpile for total of 75-76 aircraft !
Or did I miss something and are those SU-27 SK/UBK and J-11's upgraded to operate these missiles ?

Your are correct. The j-11A upgrade done to almost all j-11's provides ar radar and avionic upgrade to allow them to support r-77. Btw, there are 95-100 su-30mkk/2's in the plaaf inventory.

btw, plaaf actually uses PL-12. SD-10 is the export version. And yes, 1500 AA-12 is reasonable if my estimation on the number of AA-12 capable planes is correct (around 200 to 250). There is also possibility that the original su-27sk will be upgraded to the J-11A standard, you never know.

According to SIPRI, China now has 300 R-77s, but SIPRI's data tends to be a little dated and sometimes undereported. China might have more R-77s now.

The J-11s and the newer Su-27UBKs can use the R-77 as they had the upgrades. The older Su-27SKs and UBKs cannot unless they were also upgraded.

Hmm, I had heard China already bought 1,000 Adders. Then again, perhaps these come in as each batch of Su-30MKKs come in. Don't know if that means they'll be buying more Su-30MKKs or if they'll be using the rest for the J-11. If there are 300 R-77s in service right now, that likely means there are 800 extra being ordered in addition to the 1,000. Perhaps those extras are mostly targeted towards the J-11A and B. More the J-11A then B since the latter will likely use the PL-12.

It is all rather confusing. However, it does seem to make sense.
