An unusual clash between a 6-foot (1.8m) alligator and a 13-foot (3.9m) python has left two of the deadliest predators dead in Florida's swamps.

The Burmese python tried to swallow its fearsome rival whole but then exploded.

I'm not sure what to say, other than that's the strangest story I've heard for quite a while!

This sort of thing is rare, but they will try to eat a lot of creatures. Basically if they think they can swallow it, big snakes will go for it. Unfortunately this snake misjudged the size of a 'gator!

I think that this happened a while ago...

Yeah, it got sucked onto the front of the website under "most e-mailed". I guess someone must have come across it relatively recently and rekindled interest in it.

Boy, this is old news!

Yes, I think that's been mentioned already. But neither renmin nor myself had heard of this - that goes to show that not everyone had come across the story. I'm not sure how it works in North America, but in the UK we don't have Discovery Channel or Animal Planet, unless you pay for subscription services (which are rarely worth getting).

Well I heard about this and seen the pic long before the documentary was made because it was on the internet from where the producers got the idea to make it. So it was circulating the net first for a while.
