Not a surprise if they have multirole abilities designed into them from the get-go, but again we don’t know the depth of their weapon bays (and in the J-XDS’s case no info on the bays at all) so I would wait a bit till we have an idea of the actual bay depth before coming to any conclusions.
I think it's safe to say that if the J-36's main weapons bays are 7m long then they are designed for more than just PL-17s.

They are not canards, they are EAGLE WINGS!!!
Wrong-they are FREEDOM WINGS!!!! :p :p :pAs of now they are all make-believe wings as the F47 doesn't exist except for the USA becoming like lying ,delusional indians saying it flew 5 years ago hahaha-meanwhile the timing of these hopefully real J36 fightsis a big "middle finger" <to the vapourware F47(not in flight, not in tarmac, not in hangar!!-not getting photographed by the US press etc>- from the PLAAF to the USAF-"eat my dust":):):)

I was excited to see the notification from the Shenyang thread only to find that the J-36 had invaded the J-XS's safe space lol.

SAC apparently flew first, but here they are getting overshadowed in their own main thread. :/

What is the plan for the Shenyang 6th gen. Considering that J-35 is still in development, isn't it too early for PLA navy to have another new carrier fighter? It also does not make sense for air force to use this plane when they already have j-36 in development. The size difference between this and J-36 is not that great to create hi-lo mix type situation.

It certainly does makes sense for the PLAAF to operate both of them. In fact, both the Chengdu's J-36 and Shenyang's J-XDS are actually complementary to one another.

This compilation which I made yesterday should provide a brief yet good explanation on the topic:

(The "dump truck" i.e. bomber refers to the still-WIP H-20.)

As for the size difference between the two - While the J-XDS is pretty much Flanker-sized based on photo and video footages, the J-36 is actually significantly larger and heavier than the J-XDS. Otherwise, why would the J-36 even need 3x large-thrust engines and all of its landing gears in dual-wheel configuration, whereas the J-XDS only needs 2x large-thrust engines and single-wheel configuration for its rear landing gear pair?

This is also the direct result of the respective roles at which the J-36 and J-XDS are expected to shoulder in the aerial warfare systems of the future, combined with the characteristics and capabilities which correspond to their aforementioned roles, as per the explanation compilation above.

isn't it too early for PLA navy to have another new carrier fighter?

It's definitely not too early. In fact, the J-XDS(H) should be arriving onboard the PLAN flat-decks just in time. In contrast, the J-35 is the one who's actually late to the show.

Besides, similar to how the F/A-XXs are meant to replace the F/A-18E/Fs and serve alongside F-35Cs onboard USN CVNs in the future - The J-XDS(H)s will be the ones to replace the J-15A/Ts and serve alongside J-35s onboard PLAN CVs and future CVNs in the coming years.

Said to be the J-XDS conducting fuel dump test.

Posted by @热可可和阿华田 on Weibo, who said that the person taking this photograph can identify that aircraft being the J-XDS with his/her binoculars.

In the meantime, @Captain小潇 mentioned that the J-XDS had another test flight just this afternoon, although there isn't yet any publicly-available, clear-enough photo.

The progress of J-XDS is also said to be pretty much the same as the J-36 down south.

Source video.
The uploader whose IP address is located in Liaoning province, claims that he used a telescope to identify it as the SHADE.
Since it was shot on an iPhone and the distance is so great, we can't really tell if it's real deal or not. We'll need more videos to confirm.

Edit: Shenyang has a population of 9 million, and on a clear day, he's the only one who captured this on video. I find that incredibly bizarre...

I wonder how many residential buildings are near the SAC airfield that the J-XDS is flying from.
