Russia’s state unitary enterprise “Uralvagonzavod,” the country’s top battle tank producer, on Sunday signed a production deal with Pakistan, a day after the country’s Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, the Pakistan Times newspaper reports.

The ’tank production’ deal between the Uralvagonzavod plant and Islamabad was signed on the sidelines of the “UralArmsExpo” exhibition in Nizhny Tagil in the Sverdlovsk region.

“We can say that tank-production contracts between Uralvagonzavod and Pakistan have been clinched,” the director of the Union of Regional Defence Industry, Viktor Batuyev, was quoted as saying by the agency without giving any details.

After his talks with Lavrov yesterday, Kasuri said both Moscow and Islamabad had agreed to upgrade their bilateral relations, while the Russian Foreign Minister said no concrete defense cooperation plans were discussed by them.

Russian news agencies reported that Pakistan would receive a large batch of modern T-90S battle tanks. A short time ago, Uralvagonzavod supplied 300 such tanks to India — Pakistan’s main rival in the Hindustan region.

it is from 2004 ... i dont think it holds any relevance. It was actualy Ukrain that signed a deal with Pakistan in 2003-2004 for more T-80U and Russians did not like it. However, Ukrain went ahead with the sale.

Just a note, MosNews tend to be very optimistic with Russian military sales. Like, before the deal is even finalized or cargo arrived on the ground, they're already congraduating on the sale. =/

I think this is inaccurate. Russians where pressuring Ukraine not to sell T-80 tanks several years back to Pakistan. Plus the article is relatively outdated. Pakistan, has received the 300 T-80 and Ukraine is supporting Pakistan in several development programs on many of Pakistans existing tanks especially in regards to Engines and armor.

Now that economic ties are warming up, I think the next step would be military ties. It was said that there were another 280 T-80UDs on order. Maybe they confused Russia with Ukraine for reason. Who knows.
