silly question, but why use a nuclear engine as the auxiliary - worst of both worlds choice?

There was some talk early in the 1990's in Canada about fitting a mini-nuclear reactor in a conventional submarine for operations under ice. The concept is not new.

It can have the best of both worlds if the sub's nuclear reactor is designed in such a way that it can be shut down or turn back on with minimal time and effort.
