RC tank model

Wonder we have any rc tank model hobbyist here at SDF?

It's the first time I get my hands on an 1/16 scaled RC tank model. It's a Heng Long 1/16 German Panther.

However, soon after I got this rc tank home, I found out it is a joke in the rc tank model world. The tank has an upper hull of a German Panther (I can't find a photo of any version of the Panther which look exactly the same as this model) but with a chassis of the Tiger! So people give it a nickname "Pantiger".

This is an all plastic model except the motor and the inner barrel of the main gun.

What this tank has: 320⁰ turret with main gun that fires 6mm ball bullets. The BB gun claims to have a range of 25 meters. I have tested that range yet but the ball bullet is too weak that it can't even penetrate a piece of paper. It has a smoking unit that imitate real engine when running. However, the smoking unit fails most of the time with some users report it fails out of the box. A speaker that imitates engine and gun sound. The engine (electric motors) seems to have excessive power when running on pave roads but too weak if goes off road especially on sand. The under hull is not well-sealed that sand get into the hull easily and everything gets stuck including the tracks. The tank use a 27Ghz radio controller with crystal sockets for changing frequency so that multiple players can play without interfering each other. This controller is short-ranged and very hard to control the tank at low speed.

I have learned that people upgrade their rc tanks with metal components so I do the same. My metal components are on its way which include:
- Metal high speed gearbox costs 298 RMB
- Metal tracks, sprockets and idlers, cost 230 RMB
- Heng Long's 2.4G remote controller costs 200 RMB

So, the total upgrade package for me is 728 RMB is roughly translated into 115 USD. It's about the cost that I paid for the tank.

I remembered a post I made a while back about all-metal models:

https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/la...controlled-military-models.t7091/#post-312362

These guys make all metal large models. All parts are hand/machine made and correct to original specifications correctly scaled. Costs a fortune though.

There is also a guy who made 1:5 scale F-16 to specs (including cockpit and landing gear details), and it came with it's own small jet engine to fly.

I will make a video of this (rc) tank once I get the upgrade package.

Yeah, those metal models are great but cost a big bunch of money as well. Here is a documentary video of those Chinese guys who make large metal model.

As long as I get into the world of rc tank models, I found something like:
- 1/16 scaled models are most popular. Maybe due to its portability and large enough for most off road missions
- Tamiya (made in Japan?) and Heng Long (made in China) dominate the market of rc tanks. Serious hobbyists would opt for Tamiya for its quality and high performance but also cost a fortune as a 1/16 tank costs nearly $1,000. Others would buy Heng Long and upgrade their tanks with whatever components available. The total upgraded cost is still just 1/3 or 1/2 of a Tamiya.
- Most rc tanks are WWII models. I think one of the reasons behind this is the vital roles of tanks in world war 2.

GREAT job...and thanks for this post.

I like the RC world, and the armor...although there are some amazing aircraft and ships for RC too.

I just have a desire to build collections of many different ships and aircraft and to do it with RC would bankrupt me! Heck, my wife says I spend too much as it is.

Anyhow, she also is the one that suggested I get back into it now as good therapy after my serious cancer...and she was right.

Your Tank is looking great. Please show us how you integrate the metal pieces onto to your stock tank once you get them.

Bravo!

How does the Leopard 2A6 look side by side with a Tiger II?

Here the dimensions of the King Tiger:

I'd never notice the King Tiger is so large. That's almost the size of the Leopard 2A6!

@Jeff:
RC modeling would bankrupt me too. So I just do it step by step, one after another. For some hobbyist I've known on the web, they have some like 10 tanks or more. If they upgrade every tank to the highest level, that would mean something like $1000 per tank.

The Leo2 I bought is currently just for displaying with all stock components. It costs me just $110. I am now ordering parts and components for my Tiger I project. You know that PanTiger is model of nothing, and I want to convert it to a real Tiger I.

Leopard 2A6 out for hunting. Grass mission, next mission will be sand. The plastic tracks don't have enough traction to climb slops. The tank need metal gearboxes and tracks to navigate well in long grass field. Plastics are only for paved surface.
