I love this story.

Apparently, PLAN is expanding its foreign visits and want good looking sailors to represent it during overseas visits.

I don't know what just happened but my post disappeared..Oh well..

I think that this move is a precursor to the PLAN operating as a blue water navy.:) Oh yea..I really want to see those PLAN ships in San diego or Long Beach..How about San Francisco??? What great "PR" move that would be by the PLAN!:china:

Maybe the USN should adopt the same policy..afterall there are some butt ugly sailors in the USN!!!

Hey wait a minute..are there Female sailors on board PLAN ships??? Hummm. I see the standards for women. But I've not seen any females on a PLAN ship.

To be honest in some ways I'm not sure how to respond. I did wonder whether there might have been a slight confusion, as perhaps they only meant that they would want "good looking" sailors for overseas visits, or something. But the wording seems rather clear. If it is true then it goes to demonstate the control-freakery and obsessive nature of the bigwigs (guess this was a politically-motivated decision).

[NO POLITICS!!!!] :)

Very, very strange. Highly amusing. But still very weird. Makes me think of those old imperial examinations.

Official: "Do you have experience of how to solve public planning problems?"
Candidate: "No, but I can make a great poem about breezes on moon-lit evenings."
Official: "You're hired!"

Who cares if sailors are competant, brave and hard-working - so long as they all look like Jet Li! China will win a future war not through military expertise but by blinding its enemies with the light from the perfect smiles of its troopers. :D

EDIT: Pop, you really are a spoil-sport :p

On a more serious note, I think the height restrictions are rather unfair. Sure Chinese people are growing taller, but they're not that tall. Perfectly able people will be left behind for the sake of image.

Ahemm..well according to the article the recruits will be tested for;

Candidates will also be tested on their professional knowledge and physical and psychological stamina, he says

So it appears that they want beauty and brains...

I seem to remember that there are on this forum, some PLAN pics (PLAN pic thread??) showing an ROK ship making an official visit to Shanghai. One of the pictures showed a selection of very pretty young lady sailors in mini skirt uniforms (phroarr:p ) as part of the offical reception.

Personally I think I would have surrendered in the spot, war or no war, just as a precautionary measure;)

I wonder if this requirement will go out to officers aswell. I mean Napoleon wasnt exactly the tallest or most handsome general, but he sure could command. The PLAN might be losing out on alot with this move.

All silliness aside..Miggy is right. The PLAN maybe missing out on some outstanding potential sailors simply because of someones appearence. They need brain power for a fully functional modern navy.

170's just five seven, it's not that tall. I went to Beijing some while back, and basically everybody's that height.

Besides, I haven't heard anything about it... I would like to know which 'official' this is supposed to be. It sounds more like requirement for guard of honour (ships that actually visit foreign ports) than an across the board requirement to me.
