Hong Kong (CNN) The search is on for China's teen top guns.

China said Monday it has selected 16 high schools to offer pilot training as the country's armed forces seek to attract better qualified recruits.

The schools, in 11 provinces across the country, will recruit 1,000 male junior high school students aged between 14 to 16,

Successful applicants will receive flight training and "military standard" physical training in addition to their regular high-school studies.

wannabe pilots to take psychological assessments and a flight simulation test.

China's military has traditionally been focused on winning land battles and is now making efforts to improve its air and naval power in the pursuit of what President Xi Jinping has called "balanced strength."

"China has made many strides in the development of advanced aircraft, but it must make sure there can be sufficient, well-trained pilots to fly them," Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine told

released last month singled out the quality and professionalism of new recruits as a major challenge.

Many are still drawn from rural areas with limited education, while country's one-child policy, which has created the "little emperor" phenomenon of spoiled children, produces recruits who "may not be tough enough to withstand military discipline," the report added.

To this end, China has been making efforts to recruit more high school and college graduates as it modernizes its armed forces.

On completing the three-year program, students will take a pilot selection test, and those who pass will join a PLA flight academy and those who fail can choose to enter other military universities or civilian institutes.

Kwaig's article above is about the Chinese People's Republic Army Air Force (PLAAF) starting, in essence, a Officer/Pilot Training program, and reaching all the way down into the Jr. High Schools to start it.

So, this thread will be about China's Air Force Officer Training Programs...particularly for the Air Force, and can extend into Reserve Officers (which is where the US Term ROTC comes from).

If there is much interest and discussion, we will keep it as a separate thread.

if not, we will move it into the PLAAF News thread.

I fleshed out the original post by adding the text and a pic.

They should offer drone academy as the fallback before offering other military universities or civilian institutes to maximize ROI on that 3 year program.

WS10 is running how many J11B/S ? Probably over 200

That's 200 x 2= 400 engines

What's average flying hours for Flanker regiment? Say 150-175... ...

Since 2011, after the 1st Annual Golden Helmet Combat Transparent Competition ... ...

PLAAF pilots are practising at minimum 2 hours of Flying hours per day for their daily dose of Combat Dog Fight exercise with their teammates.
At present, almost all PLAAF pilots are OBSESSED with beating their local Golden Helmet Champions. Those pilots that does not exhibit competitive attitude, will be demoted quickly.
The whole process is absolutely open and transparent.
Personal connection ( Guanxi ) and Ranking do not mean anything now.
If you have a weak attitude and lazy, then you will be gone.

Each week, there are at minimum 2 intensive Blue vs Red team day and night exercises that take a minimum 3 hours of Flying hours. They have 6 working days.
Assuming PLAAF pilots only fly 2 hours of Flying hours per day for 5 days.

Thus, PLAAF pilots fly 2x5 = 10 hours of Flying hours per week.
Let's assume time off for National Holidays = 4 weeks per year.

Then, PLAAF pilots fly 10x48 = 480 hours of Flying hours per year.

That's s lot flying hours. I thought most western AF pilots fly a little over 200 hours annually. So how reliable is your estimate?

Is it possible that your flying time is for each plane but pilot? We know that PLAAF pilots share planes. So the 2 hours/ day could be shared between 2 pilots. Even that, it's still a lot of hours.

There is no indication they fly 2 hours 5 days a week for 48 days. Please actually find support for this rather than just putting in your assumptions.

Two hours per flying day is reasonable, but no one is going to be flying every working day of the week.

At most I think pilots will get 2-3 flying days per week. With classroom theory, simulator training, PT, mission planning etc taking up the bulk of their week.

2x2x48=192 hours per year, which is pretty much what western pilots would get.

I hope this is not off topic by much.
Since Flying hours is related to testing aircraft Engines Reliability.

Firstly, my sources are from watching all those Golden Helmet Combat Dogfighting Transparent Competition YouTube videos.
I had already posted some of the video links on the Flanker thread, many times before.

Have any of you watched ALL those Golden Helmet Combat Dogfighting Transparent Competition videos ??
Apparently not.

Below is the story of why --- PLAAF fighter pilots fly 2 hours of Flying hours per day for at least 5 working days.

===

In 2011, the first year of Golden Helmet Combat Dogfighting Transparent Competition, a squadron leader from ChengDu MR, named JIANG Jia Ji obliterate everyone with a totally lopsided score of 42 : 0 using the outdated J-11A.
JIANG Jia Ji became the 1st time Golden Helmet Champion in 2011.

In 2012, the 2nd year of Golden Helmet Combat Dogfighting Transparent Competition, JIANG Jia Ji using his outdated J-11A became the Golden Helmet Champion for the second time, despite being targeted by all the Top Notch PLAAF fighter pilots using other plane with better avionics.

During the debriefing session after combat, all other PLAAF fighter pilots are curious about the secret sauce JIANG Jia Ji uses on his daily training.

===

JIANG Jia Ji explained that he uses AB sessions of 113 training method routine. -- A session is in the morning and B session is in the afternoon for 6 working days per week.
To even the odd for his teammate and improve his performance, JIANG Jia Ji is not using 1 versus 1, but 3 teammate versus (1, JIANG Jia Ji) or 5 teammate versus (2, JIANG Jia Ji + Wingman).

JIANG Jia Ji is not only honing his piloting skill, but he also researches the physical Limits and strengths and weaknesses of each aircraft from J-11A to J-11xx to Su-30MKK, and how to conserve fuel, and their corresponding avionics and weaponry.

The PLAAF leadership was very impressed with his absolute dedication and meticulousness. JIANG Jia Ji was promoted as Regiment leader.
And at the end of 2012, JIANG Jia Ji 113 training method is adopted nationwide.

113 training method = ( 1 hour Briefing + 1 hour Combat Dogfighting + 3 hours Debriefing )

===

Some of you may know that PLA is using Rank + Grade system to promote all soldiers.
All these daily Combat Dogfighting and weekly intensive Blue versus Red exercises are totally transparent, and fair, and recorded permanently. --- There is no way for any undedicated pilot to hide their inferior performances behind his rank or personal connection or family background.
Thus, the old practises of Personal Guanxi are gone.
Now, everything is based on merit.

It is very possible for a higher ranking officer to get beaten by a junior newcomer. For any self-respecting PLAAF officer, this is totally unacceptable, and deeply embarrassing, and the frequent underperformer will be quickly demoted.
Thus, all PLAAF fighter pilots are obsessed and dedicated to improve their piloting skills, and their avionics knowledge, and their ECM skills every single day.

Every PLAAF pilots ( Juniors and Seniors ) know if one is ambitious and wants to be promoted quickly, and one desires to fly in the latest cutting edge state of the art aircraft, such as J-20, and have your personal name recorded in the history book, then the road to Stardom is by
becoming Free Style Golden Helmet Champion.

I think ( classroom theory, simulator training, mission planning ) are done during the debriefing period.
11 working hours per day is normal for all PLAAF fighter pilots nationwide.
I am not certain if they are working 5 or 6 days per week.

There is no question all Golden Helmet Champions are working at 6 days per week. Because, he is aware that every fighter pilots in his surrounding would like to beat him
(the local Golden Helmet Champion) in order to maximize their opportunity to attend the annual Golden Helmet Combat Dogfighting Transparent Competition.

Therefore, I arrived at my minimum estimate of 2 hours of Flying hours per day for at least 5 working days.

===

NOTE:
BTW, JIANG Jia Ji was not available to attend the 2013 and 2014 Golden Helmet Competitions.
But, JIANG Jia Ji did attend the 2015 Golden Helmet Competition, using his outdated J-11A. And, again he was the 2 on 2 Freestyle winner and he became the 3rd time Golden Helmet Champion. I think JIANG Jia Ji can become 5 times Golden Helmet Champion, if he attended the 2013 and 2014 Competitions.

JIANG Jia Ji sacrifice his own personal glory for patriotic purpose.
He was assigned an unknown National Task.
It was possible he was asked by YANG Wei J-20 Chief Designer or PLAAF central leadership
to help develop J-20 into a better combat fighter.

Dang, even his name sounds like he was born to fly. Jiang = last name, Jia = could mean pilot, Ji = could be aircraft! But I didn't actually watch the videos so I'm not sure on the tones. When they kick in, could mean something totally different... But in the mean time, his name sounds as good for a pilot as Usain Bolt does for a sprinter to me! 42-0? They should clone him!
