I was looking at the USN web site and saw this story. I found the fact that this PLA General Guo Boxiong, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, People's Liberation Army was visiting the USN in San Diego very intresting. I know that a few months ago PACCOM ADM. W. Fallon visited the PLA in the PRC in May.

What I would like to know is what do our forum members think of a visit like this? Good? bad? Indiffrent? Also how high up is this general in the PLA chain of command? Personally I think this is a great exchange.

(July 17, 2006) - General Guo Boxiong, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, People's Liberation Army, China, Commander Naval Surface Forces Vice Adm. Terrance Etnyre, and Commander Carrier Strike Group Seven, Rear Adm. Michael Miller tour USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). Boxiong tour of Reagan was part of a visit to the United States to improve military understanding by both nations, enhance friendships and expand mutual cooperation.

I found another pic of the General with of all people Rummy!!!! Dude must be heavy hitter to be invited to the Pentagon....

The last picture with Rumsfield. Anyone noticed the Chinese officer in the background. Seems like he is trying to squeeze in behind the honor guard and the velvate ropes.

Anyone has any idea as to what exactly is he doing?

I do not know excatly what he is doing. But From my 20 years experience in the USN he is probally just trying to stay out of the way of media persons trailing rummy and Gen Guo Boxiong. And he is probally part of the Gen staff and is simply trying to keep up with the General.

Well these exchanges seem harmless. I was more interested in the recent US Navy exercise in the Pacific that the Chinese were invited to. It sounded like to what I read of the Chinese reaction was something like to the effect of being overly excited at what they saw. I know usually when the Pentagon allows potential adversaries to watch war games, it's meant to give them an idea of what they would be up against and make them have second thoughts at any potential rivalry. I wonder if that reaction from the Chinese is what the Pentagon expected.

Vice Chairman of the CCM? Well, Jintao is Chairman, so I guess this general is second in command of the military? Unless there are several vice chairmans. >_>

General Guo Boxiaong, Commander Naval Surface Forces Vice Adm, why was he in PLA Amy uniform, not in Navy's?
Compared with US generals, he really needs to loose weight.

 ..Yea The General needs to loose weight. But I was checking his bio. He was born in 1942. So that makes him 10-20 older than the US Generals and Admirals he is visiting in the US. The older a person is the harder it is to stay in shape. I should know..

As for the uniform I do not know anything about PLA uniforms..

Personally, I'm very happy that the General is in the US. This visit will help foster greater understanding between the PRC and US.

As for the recent excersises in the Pacific visited by the PLA hiearchy. I'm sure the US put on a good show. Just enough so the PLA would be impressed. They probaly have some sort of agreement that the US will observe some PLA excersise in the new future. I would love to see a excersise where the two nations train in some sort of humanitarian effort.

Well it is the PLAN: People's Liberation Army Navy. The Navy in China is a branch of the Army. Wierd, I know. I think that China will do away with that when they gain and feel comfortable with superpower status and/or when they feel they have blue water navy capability.

Why are people busting on the General's weight? He actually looks pretty good and healthy for a guy his age.

Anyways, I think these visits are very productive in at least establishing lines of communications between countries. Closer contacts means better opportunities to keep East Asia stable.

A hearty welcome to the USA to the honorable General.
